Vegan San Diego | Amardeen Cafe

The third stop of our USA trip was the awesome city of San Diego where we stayed near the insanely cool La Jolla Cove. We got to hang out and snorkel on the beach where all of these beautiful sea lions live and it was pretty much my highlight of our trip, as you all know how much I love animals!

image

Aside from trying to make friends with as many animals as possible, we of course also ate lots of delicious vegan food whilst in San Diego, and I’m really excited to tell you guys about one of our favourite restaurants of the entire trip today:

Amardeen Cafe ▷▷▷

When Matt and I were at University we were obsessed with a little cafe that served awesome vegan lebanese food; so we were super excited when we found out that there was a Lebanese restaurant (Amardeen Cafe) a short walk away from our hotel.

When we arrived at Amardeen Cafe we were greeted by the lovely Mark, whose parents own the restaurant. He explained to us that Amardeen serves a huge variety of authentic lebanese dishes, and that lots of them are naturally vegan. Mark very kindly offered to create a meza especially for us so that we could try out all of the vegan options Amardeen Cafe has to offer, and there were a lot of delicious dishes!

So, I’m going to chat you guys through the vegan options we tried out, and have put a little star (*) next to my 3 faves in case you need help choosing what to order as there are so many delicious options to choose from!

image

ROUND 1  ▷▷▷

Pita bread & pita chips – I’d never tried pita chips before, and boy have I been missing out! They were so crispy and flavourful and tasted amazing dipped in hummus!

Hummus – Amardeen’s hummus is freshly made and is definitely one of the best I’ve ever tried.

Garlic spread – this dish was another one that I’d never tried before, and for someone like me who adds garlic to pretty much everything, it’s basically the perfect spread!

Tabouleh – you all know that I’m not a huge salad lover (#badvegan), but I was definitely a fan of the tabouleh/falafel/pita bread/hummus/garlic spread combination.

Spinach fatayer – Matt was super jealous that he couldn’t try these delicious little spinach parcels (as they contain nuts) but I definitely wasn’t complaining about having to eat both of them!

Falafel* – now, as a big falafel lover I have tried a lot of different falafel, so believe me when I say that these falafels were amazing! They were light & fluffy on inside, crispy on the outside and bursting with flavour – a definite must try if you visit Amardeen Cafe!

image

ROUND 2  ▷▷▷

Squash kebeh – this is one of the most complex dishes to make and is traditionally made from meat, so it was really cool to be able to try out the veganised version.

Cauliflower tagine* – conversely, this dish is one of the simplest to make (just fry cauliflower & cover in tahini) but it is SO delicious and definitely one I’ll be trying to recreate at home!

image

ROUND 3  ▷▷▷

M’jadra – this brown lentil based dish lasted under 2 minutes around Matt (I think it’s safe to say he was a fan) but the little bit I did manage to try before he wolfed it down tasted great, especially when coupled with the moussaka.

Moussaka* – this spicy eggplant and garbanzo bean dish was so flavourful and delicious and definitely one of my favourites!

Thank you so much to Mark and his family for hosting us at their restaurant. It was awesome to have the opportunity to try out all of the delicious vegan dishes and to also learn a bit about the Lebanese traditions and culture from Mark.

If you’re in San Diego and would like to try out some authentic, vegan Lebanese cuisine, be sure to head to Amardeen Cafe and ask for them to chat you through the vegan options, I’m sure you’ll love it just as much as we did!

VEGAN IN SAN FRANCISCO | SEED AND SALT

In case you missed my previous post, I thought I’d give you a little update: Matt and I are currently travelling in the USA! Our first stop was LA (you can read about that here) and the second stop of our trip was in the beautiful city of San Francisco. Once again we spoiled for choice when it came to exciting things to explore and delicious vegan eateries to try out.

image

One of our favourite restaurants we visited in San Diego was Seed + Salt. When Matt and I eat out, especially when we’re travelling, we usually tend to lean more towards the ‘junk food vegan’ end of the spectrum; so Seed + Salt was a much-needed refreshing change to all of the pizzas and burgers we’ve been eating. Seed + Salt is a cutely decorated little cafe on Chestnut Street that serves healthy, creative twists on classic favourites (like the BLT) without compromising on delicious taste.

img_2472

Matt and I both decided to go for the Collard wraps, I ordered the NorCal and Matt had the BLT. The wraps are absolutely huge and are filled with nutritious, organic and delicious ingredients. The eggplant bacon in the BLT was absolutely incredible, it was so crispy and flavourful and just insalnely delicious!

image

I also loved the cucumber/cashew cream cheese combination in the Norcal as it reminded me of my favourite afternoon tea sandwiches.

image

Even though we were both really full after our wraps, the desserts looked so delicious that we had to try a couple. Matt got the rice crispie treat (which he loved) and I ordered the nutella brownie which was soooo good and tasted insanely like nutella.

image

So, if you ever find yourself in San Francisco and are looking for healthy and delicious food, be sure to check out Seed + Salt; I’m sure you’ll love it as much as we did!

Vegan in LA | Fala Bar

Matt and I are currently traveling in the USA and our first stop was the vegan food heaven that is LA. There is such an incredible variety of delicious vegan food available and we had so much fun trying out as many vegan eateries as we possibly could during our stay!

In four short days we ate: pizza, thai food, waffles, ice-cream, burgers, burritos and my favourite meal of the trip so far – the falafel sandwich at Fala bar.

Fala bar is located in both Venice and West Hollywood and offers a variety of falafel flavours and an array of delicious dishes to enjoy them in. They also have a great selection of drinks, including this pink coconut water which Matt absolutely loved!

image

For our main meals, Matt ordered the Southwest Burger, I ordered the Original Fala Sandwich and we shared a side of crispy sweet potato fries, and everything was absolutely delicious!

image

Fala bar is definitely up there when it comes to serving some of the best Falafel I’ve ever eaten. Both of our dishes were bursting with flavour and had the perfect combination of ingredients.

Now, maybe (/definitely) I’m just a messy eater but I always find falafel sandwiches so hard to eat elegantly, and with a sandwich as tasty as this, it’s definitely the kinda meal you just wanna lock yourself in a room with so that you can enjoy all of its deliciousness without having to worry about the sauce that somehow managed to get on your cheek bone (true story).

image

All jokes aside, the food at Fala bar is absolutely phenomenal. In fact, we loved it so much that that we decided to get a takeout the day after our first visit, so that we could eat it as messily as we liked!

Next time I’m in LA, I will definitely be heading back to Fala Bar to work my way through their delicious menu.

If you’d like to see more of the food we’ve been eating and also what we’ve been getting up to, I’ve been vlogging our entire trip so you can head to my youtube channel and watch those videos there: https://www.youtube.com/channel/UCWITr6x8M0wHoDcwTNlyJ7w

VEGAN IN PARIS – SHAKESPEARE AND COMPANY CAFÉ

Last weekend, I visited Paris with some of my best friends from uni and whilst we were wandering around the city, we stumbled upon Shakespeare and Company Café. I was so happy to see that they had lots of vegan options so we decided to check them out. I ordered  a fresh orange juice with a hummus and carrot bagel; it was bursting with flavour and tasted absolutely delicious!

image

I’m so pleased we found this little gem of a café and will definitely be heading back there next time I’m in Paris to work my way through the menu.

Whilst we were in Paris we also spent a day in Disney Land; even though we’re all grown up now, it was still such a magical experience. I vlogged our whole weekend, including our visit to Shakespeare and Company Café and our magical day in Disneyland – it’s a super fun vlog so be sure to check that out here:

If you’re planning on visiting Paris and would like more ideas of where to find delicious vegan food, check out my previous vegan in Paris blog post here.

Where’s your favourite vegan eatery in Paris? Have you ever been to Disney Land? Let me know down below 🙂 xo

3 BEST VEGAN BURGERS IN LONDON

In honour of national burger day, I thought I’d share my 3 favourite vegan burgers from London (and its surrounding areas). These 3 burgers are proof of how delicious and flavourful veggie burgers can be, and I’m pretty sure that by the end of this post you’ll be craving a big, delicious veggie burger (I know I am)!

1. Mildred’s Classic Burger

The classic burger from Mildred’s is without a doubt my favourite burger of all time. The burger patty contains smoked tofu, lentils and piquillo peppers, and is served in a fluffy focaccia bun with relish, rocket, red onion and tomato. It is bursting with flavour and tastes even better when accompanied by a portion of Mildred’s delicious chunky chips.

Mildred’s now has 3 locations across London: Soho, Camden & Kings Cross, so there is even more opportunity to try out one of these delicious burgers for yourself!

2. Fortify Café’s Falafel Burger

As a big fan of falafel, I am an even bigger fan of Fortify Café’s delicious falafel burger! It is served in a big wholemeal bun, with creamy mint yoghurt sauce and a huge, flavourful garden salad on the side.

Fortify Café is located in Maidstone in Kent, just outside of London, and is definitely worth a visit!

3. VBites Café’s Hickory Chick Burger

VBites Café has a huge variety of veggie burgers on their menu and I particularly love their Hickory Chick Burger. It contains smokey, glazed BBQ chicky pieces, and is served on a toasted bun with coleslaw and delicious skinny fries on the side.

VBites Café is located in the beautiful Brighton, just outside of London, meaning you can enjoy a walk along the beach after eating a delicious burger.

I would love to hear if you guys have tried any of these burgers and/or what your favourite veggie burgers are?

INTERVIEW WITH KENDEN FROM JEWISH FOOD HERO

My JGV Interview series is making a comeback and I am really excited to kick it off with an interview with the lovely and inspiring Kenden from Jewish Food Hero. From travelling the world working with the UN and NGOs, to being a working mum, to writing an awesome blog and cook book, Kenden has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share. I have absolutely loved hearing more about her journey and lifestyle and I’m positive you all will too ►▷►

Q: How did your vegan journey start, what were your main inspirations and influences?

When I was 12 years old, I became a vegetarian after reading a part of a simple book about Mahatma Gandhi.  His commitment to nonviolence in all aspects in his life, including food, inspired me to change the way that I ate. As I became an adult and started traveling all over the world as an aid worker, I started to see and experience more traditional food cultures, which are starch centered (rice, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes).  During my overseas experience, I read the Starch Solution.  This book coupled with my field experience reaffirmed my commitment to plant based eating.
JEWISH FOOD HERO

Q: You have an awesome blog – Jewish Food Hero, tell us all about how you got into blogging and the inspiration behind JFH.

I yearned for healthier Jewish food options that were modern, plant based and beautiful. When I couldn’t find recipes that inspired me for the holidays, I created my own.

Shortly thereafter I started Jewish Food Hero to share recipes and inspire other Jewish women to include healthier foods on their tables. At it’s core, Jewish Food Hero is a place that nourishes the minds, bodies, and spirits of women around the globe. I also provide inspiring and beautiful resources, such as the luxe letterpress holiday calendar, to support women as they engage in Jewish life.

JEWISH FOOD HERO BLOG

Q: As well as creating Jewish Food Hero, you’ve spent 10 years working with the United Nations and NGOs which has taken you all over the world. I’d love to hear more about your fascinating career and travels and how you maintained a vegan diet whilst travelling?

Since 2005, I have lived in worked in five countries (India, Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Switzerland and Cambodia) in addition to traveling a lot in Africa, Asia and Europe.  At the beginning of this global experience, I stopped being exclusively vegan for one year as an experiment.  At the time, I was not sure how to negotiate my food preferences with the multicultural experience I was having.  To put it simply, I did not want to go around saying “no” to people who wanted to share their cultural foods with me.  My health deteriorated during this year.

Looking back, I feel grateful that I had a non-vegan experience with food because it showed me two important things.  First, it is showed me that I like creating an inviting atmosphere around food (it really is more fun to say “yes” than “no”).  It is important to me to be kind to others and allow them to share with me.  Sharing food is a common gesture in every culture.  Second, it allowed me to recommit to eating plant based as an adult.  Plant based eating is the best choice for me because it aligns with my values and it makes me feel physically well.

Now, I find it very simple and exciting to be a vegan as I travel.  There are so many vegetarian and vegan restaurants now (I use the Happy Cow app and search “vegan food in city X” on Google to find healthy places to eat wherever I am).

Q: Where in the world have you found the best vegan food?

For me, Asia!

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: Hum Vegetarian Restaurant and Cafe offers an ambiance that is beautiful and well thought out. Each dish is plated beautifully, and the food was fresh and delicious. The restaurant tagline is “Peace comes from within” and this is indeed how I felt eating there, both during and after the experience.

Bali, Indonesia: I ate a beautiful organic vegan meal at Liat Solomons Down to Earth Cafe.  The cafe feels aligned with Solomon’s values to create a business that is grounded in love,  non-violence and health-conscious living.

Kyoto, Japan: Zen Vegetarian lunch at the Tenryu-ji Temple is nourishing and peaceful.  The meal in this Zen monastery “is just enough to satisfy the palate and the soul.”

Q: They all sound great! I love finding delicious vegan eateries when travelling. What are your top tips for someone travelling as a vegan?

Transform anxiety into excitement:  Looking back, when I had a hard time being vegan, it was less about the geographic location and more about me.  When I was younger, I was less willing to speak up about my food preferences.  I had in my mind that I was holding onto a perspective that I might burden others, or that my preferences indicated that I was “difficult” or “controlling” about food.

Ask for what you want and be specific:  When I travel now, I create laminated business sized cards that say “I eat vegan. No Meat. No fish. No dairy (milk, butter, yogurt). No oil.” in the local language.  When I go to restaurants, I show this to the server so they know help me order food that meets my preferences.

Eat your starches:  Eating simple starches every day will keep you energized and your digestive system in good shape as you travel.  My favorites are rice (white and brown), potatoes and sweet potatoes.

Q: I love the idea of carrying a card in the local language explaining your dietary needs – I’ll definitely use that tip when I visit Asia later this year! Now, onto your delicious cook book, what kind of recipes does it contain and do you have an absolute favourite?

Jewish Food Hero Cookbook: 50 Simple Plant-Based Recipes for Your Holiday Meals offers simple and healthy recipes for 10 major Jewish Holidays.  The recipes align with what we know about the benefits of plant-based food, and pull from our Jewish traditional and symbolic dishes. That said, anyone can enjoy these recipes!

A Sweet Squash Spread that can be served with apple slices, break-fast Cardamom Coffee Cake, Vegetarian Shepherd’s Pie… I can’t choose!

If you’d like to get a taste of what’s in the cookbook, you can download my mock chopped liver recipe. It is delicious, healthy and touches at our Jewish food memories.  It is a savory dip made from mushrooms and walnuts and can be enjoyed on a salad or as a spread on healthy bread and crackers.

JEWISH FOOD HERO COOK BOOK

Q: If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

I would (and will) eat simple meals for the rest of my life.  For me, this means centering my meals around a starch (brown rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc), and eating a variety and good quantity of vegetables and a bit of fruit every day.

Q: Describe a day in the life of Kenden.

My daily routine and  schedule is that of a working mother in perhaps a somewhat exotic location.  Here are some details that happen daily:

Early Rise: I wake up very early and try to have 30 minutes to one hour to myself before the rest of my family wakes up.  I drink 1 liter of water with apple cider vinegar or lemon and then enjoy a fresh cup of coffee.  I sit quietly, pray, and/or do some intentional reading as a way to grounding myself for the day.

Family: I became a mother in 2010.  My daily rhythm includes caretaking: making and sharing meals, brushing teeth, reading together, practicing piano, bedtime rituals, and school drop-offs and pick-ups.

Move my body: 4-5 days per week, I do some type of physical movement.  For the last years, I have been enjoying barre3, yogaglo and pilates anytime.

Work: Quite simply, when my daughter is at school, my heart and mind are devoted to Jewish Food Hero.

Community:  I create community mostly through cooking and sharing meals.  Our family sits down together to share 2-3 meal a day. I connect with 2 close female friends per week via skype and by going out to coffee together.  We happily invite guests (the more the better) to our table every Shabbat dinner (Friday night).

Q: Do you have a favourite inspirational quote to leave us with?

Vegan banana & coconut pancakes with chocolate sauce

Whenever I find a new vegan product/brand/restaurant/anything that I love, I always like to share it with you guys on the blog, as I love reading blogs to discover new products to use and places to eat. One awesome brand I recently discovered is Ecomil.

Ecomil sells organic, vegan products including a range of delicious plant-based milks; they kindly offered to send me some of their products to try and I have become obsessed with the coconut milk! I have been having it in my morning smoothies and the coconut/banana/pineapple combo has been making it feel like I’m having a Pina Colada for breakfast every day! I’ll make sure to put a recipe up for the smoothie next week as it’s seriously so good and I think you guys are going to love it, because, let’s be real, who doesn’t want to have a healthy, delicious version of their favourite cocktail for breakfast?!

As a big fan of Ecomil’s coconut milk, I was excited when they asked if I’d like to collaborate with them and use their products to create a delicious vegan recipe for their website. I used the coconut milk to whip up these super simple and insanely delicious chunky banana & coconut pancakes with chocolate sauce!

If you’d like to make these pancakes, you can find the recipe on the Ecomil website under the vegan recipe section here.

Veggie Pret Review

I have always been a big fan of Pret; in fact, I think one of my first ever posts on this blog was about how to eat vegan at Pret (if you wanna have a little cringe at my 2014 photography skills – or lack-thereof – then  you can check that post out here). Naturally, I was therefore extremely excited to hear that Pret would be transforming one of their prime London locations – Broadwick St – into a fully vegetarian and vegan Pret ‘Veggie Pret’ for the month of June.

image

Fast forward a month and it’s great to read on Pret’s blog just how popular Veggie Pret has been, with sales in the Broadwick St shop up 70% on last year! What’s more, the vegan options have proved to be particularly big-sellers, with the top selling eight new products at Veggie Pret all being vegan! To keep up with the high demand for delicious veggie and vegan food, Pret executives have taken the very exciting decision to keep the Veggie pop-up open for the whole summer!!

As a long-time Pret lover, I knew I had to check it out, so headed to London to meet Matt for a big Veggie Pret lunch.

image

There were so many delicious options to chose from and Matt and I both like to eat a lot, so we decided shared 1 baguette (Artichoke, Tapenade & Olive) and 2 wraps (Avocado & Chipotle Chickpeas and Chakalaka); and as if that wasn’t enough I also had a Banana & Cashew Almond Shake, as well as a Cacao & Orange Pot (SO yummy!)

image

My favourite of the three was the Avocado & Chipotle Chickpeas wrap, whilst Matt loved the Arthichoke, Tapenade & Olive baguette. We both agreed that all of them were full of flavour and definitely something we would buy again!

The deliciously creamy almond milkshake has always been one of my favourite Pret drinks and I was not surprised to read that the Cacao & Orange Pot is one of the top 2 selling products at Veggie Pret, as it was absolutely delicious!

image

Following the popularity of the Veggie pop-up, Pret are now deciding what to do next, with Pret’s CEO’s blog mentioning that there are ‘some who would like to convert every fourth Pret into a Veggie Pret’ – how amazing would that be?!

If you’d like more to show your support for Pret’s efforts to make veggie meals more accessible (and delicious), be sure to visit Veggie Pret this summer and try out their abundantly varied menu! You can also fill out a review card whilst you’re there, giving feedback on what you loved and leaving some suggestions of what you’d like to see going forward.
