INTERVIEW WITH KENDEN FROM JEWISH FOOD HERO

My JGV Interview series is making a comeback and I am really excited to kick it off with an interview with the lovely and inspiring Kenden from Jewish Food Hero. From travelling the world working with the UN and NGOs, to being a working mum, to writing an awesome blog and cook book, Kenden has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share. I have absolutely loved hearing more about her journey and lifestyle and I’m positive you all will too ►▷►

Q: How did your vegan journey start, what were your main inspirations and influences?

When I was 12 years old, I became a vegetarian after reading a part of a simple book about Mahatma Gandhi.  His commitment to nonviolence in all aspects in his life, including food, inspired me to change the way that I ate. As I became an adult and started traveling all over the world as an aid worker, I started to see and experience more traditional food cultures, which are starch centered (rice, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes).  During my overseas experience, I read the Starch Solution.  This book coupled with my field experience reaffirmed my commitment to plant based eating.
JEWISH FOOD HERO

Q: You have an awesome blog – Jewish Food Hero, tell us all about how you got into blogging and the inspiration behind JFH.

I yearned for healthier Jewish food options that were modern, plant based and beautiful. When I couldn’t find recipes that inspired me for the holidays, I created my own.

Shortly thereafter I started Jewish Food Hero to share recipes and inspire other Jewish women to include healthier foods on their tables. At it’s core, Jewish Food Hero is a place that nourishes the minds, bodies, and spirits of women around the globe. I also provide inspiring and beautiful resources, such as the luxe letterpress holiday calendar, to support women as they engage in Jewish life.

JEWISH FOOD HERO BLOG

Q: As well as creating Jewish Food Hero, you’ve spent 10 years working with the United Nations and NGOs which has taken you all over the world. I’d love to hear more about your fascinating career and travels and how you maintained a vegan diet whilst travelling?

Since 2005, I have lived in worked in five countries (India, Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Switzerland and Cambodia) in addition to traveling a lot in Africa, Asia and Europe.  At the beginning of this global experience, I stopped being exclusively vegan for one year as an experiment.  At the time, I was not sure how to negotiate my food preferences with the multicultural experience I was having.  To put it simply, I did not want to go around saying “no” to people who wanted to share their cultural foods with me.  My health deteriorated during this year.

Looking back, I feel grateful that I had a non-vegan experience with food because it showed me two important things.  First, it is showed me that I like creating an inviting atmosphere around food (it really is more fun to say “yes” than “no”).  It is important to me to be kind to others and allow them to share with me.  Sharing food is a common gesture in every culture.  Second, it allowed me to recommit to eating plant based as an adult.  Plant based eating is the best choice for me because it aligns with my values and it makes me feel physically well.

Now, I find it very simple and exciting to be a vegan as I travel.  There are so many vegetarian and vegan restaurants now (I use the Happy Cow app and search “vegan food in city X” on Google to find healthy places to eat wherever I am).

Q: Where in the world have you found the best vegan food?

For me, Asia!

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: Hum Vegetarian Restaurant and Cafe offers an ambiance that is beautiful and well thought out. Each dish is plated beautifully, and the food was fresh and delicious. The restaurant tagline is “Peace comes from within” and this is indeed how I felt eating there, both during and after the experience.

Bali, Indonesia: I ate a beautiful organic vegan meal at Liat Solomons Down to Earth Cafe.  The cafe feels aligned with Solomon’s values to create a business that is grounded in love,  non-violence and health-conscious living.

Kyoto, Japan: Zen Vegetarian lunch at the Tenryu-ji Temple is nourishing and peaceful.  The meal in this Zen monastery “is just enough to satisfy the palate and the soul.”

Q: They all sound great! I love finding delicious vegan eateries when travelling. What are your top tips for someone travelling as a vegan?

Transform anxiety into excitement:  Looking back, when I had a hard time being vegan, it was less about the geographic location and more about me.  When I was younger, I was less willing to speak up about my food preferences.  I had in my mind that I was holding onto a perspective that I might burden others, or that my preferences indicated that I was “difficult” or “controlling” about food.

Ask for what you want and be specific:  When I travel now, I create laminated business sized cards that say “I eat vegan. No Meat. No fish. No dairy (milk, butter, yogurt). No oil.” in the local language.  When I go to restaurants, I show this to the server so they know help me order food that meets my preferences.

Eat your starches:  Eating simple starches every day will keep you energized and your digestive system in good shape as you travel.  My favorites are rice (white and brown), potatoes and sweet potatoes.

Q: I love the idea of carrying a card in the local language explaining your dietary needs – I’ll definitely use that tip when I visit Asia later this year! Now, onto your delicious cook book, what kind of recipes does it contain and do you have an absolute favourite?

Jewish Food Hero Cookbook: 50 Simple Plant-Based Recipes for Your Holiday Meals offers simple and healthy recipes for 10 major Jewish Holidays.  The recipes align with what we know about the benefits of plant-based food, and pull from our Jewish traditional and symbolic dishes. That said, anyone can enjoy these recipes!

A Sweet Squash Spread that can be served with apple slices, break-fast Cardamom Coffee Cake, Vegetarian Shepherd’s Pie… I can’t choose!

If you’d like to get a taste of what’s in the cookbook, you can download my mock chopped liver recipe. It is delicious, healthy and touches at our Jewish food memories.  It is a savory dip made from mushrooms and walnuts and can be enjoyed on a salad or as a spread on healthy bread and crackers.

JEWISH FOOD HERO COOK BOOK

Q: If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

I would (and will) eat simple meals for the rest of my life.  For me, this means centering my meals around a starch (brown rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc), and eating a variety and good quantity of vegetables and a bit of fruit every day.

Q: Describe a day in the life of Kenden.

My daily routine and  schedule is that of a working mother in perhaps a somewhat exotic location.  Here are some details that happen daily:

Early Rise: I wake up very early and try to have 30 minutes to one hour to myself before the rest of my family wakes up.  I drink 1 liter of water with apple cider vinegar or lemon and then enjoy a fresh cup of coffee.  I sit quietly, pray, and/or do some intentional reading as a way to grounding myself for the day.

Family: I became a mother in 2010.  My daily rhythm includes caretaking: making and sharing meals, brushing teeth, reading together, practicing piano, bedtime rituals, and school drop-offs and pick-ups.

Move my body: 4-5 days per week, I do some type of physical movement.  For the last years, I have been enjoying barre3, yogaglo and pilates anytime.

Work: Quite simply, when my daughter is at school, my heart and mind are devoted to Jewish Food Hero.

Community:  I create community mostly through cooking and sharing meals.  Our family sits down together to share 2-3 meal a day. I connect with 2 close female friends per week via skype and by going out to coffee together.  We happily invite guests (the more the better) to our table every Shabbat dinner (Friday night).

Vegan banana & coconut pancakes with chocolate sauce

Whenever I find a new vegan product/brand/restaurant/anything that I love, I always like to share it with you guys on the blog, as I love reading blogs to discover new products to use and places to eat. One awesome brand I recently discovered is Ecomil.

Ecomil sells organic, vegan products including a range of delicious plant-based milks; they kindly offered to send me some of their products to try and I have become obsessed with the coconut milk! I have been having it in my morning smoothies and the coconut/banana/pineapple combo has been making it feel like I’m having a Pina Colada for breakfast every day! I’ll make sure to put a recipe up for the smoothie next week as it’s seriously so good and I think you guys are going to love it, because, let’s be real, who doesn’t want to have a healthy, delicious version of their favourite cocktail for breakfast?!

As a big fan of Ecomil’s coconut milk, I was excited when they asked if I’d like to collaborate with them and use their products to create a delicious vegan recipe for their website. I used the coconut milk to whip up these super simple and insanely delicious chunky banana & coconut pancakes with chocolate sauce!

image

If you’d like to make these pancakes, you can find the recipe on the Ecomil website under the vegan recipe section here.

Aaaand if you’re a fan of pina coladas, be sure to look out for my healthy pina colada smoothie recipe coming to the blog next week!

VEGAN RESTAURANTS IN BOURNEMOUTH

Last weekend the JGV Compassionate Clothing Line had a stall at the Bournemouth Vegan Fair. As Matt’s lovely Grandma lives in Bournemouth (who btw at 90 years old is insanely cool, open-minded & banterous), we decided to make a weekend of it by travelling up on Friday lunchtime to spend some quality time with Grandma JJ, as well as checking out the Bournemouth vegan food scene.

image

AMALA CONSCIOUS FOOD ▷▷▷

We were really excited to hear that Bournemouth’s vegetarian restaurant Zoukinis had recently been transformed into a fully vegan restaurant, now named Amala. So, on Friday evening, we took Matt’s grandma for her first ever vegan restaurant visit to Amala.

image

The restaurant has a great yogi/eco-friendly vibe, with the beautiful woodland themed décor sprinkled with delicate fairy lights.

image

Firstly, let me say that I absolutely love the fact that you’re greeted by a glass of warm lemon water – what a great way to start a meal! The menu features an abundance of healthy and nutritious vegan cuisine, something Matt and I as wannabe HCLF but in reality Junk Food Vegans are not used to, but were very excited to try.

For main course, Grandma JJ and I both ordered the burger with sweet potato fries, whilst Matt ordered the veggie filo pastry. Although usually a bit of a Joey from F.R.I.E.N.D.S when it comes to sharing food (Joey doesn’t share food), Matt let me try a bit of his pastry and we both agreed it was absolutely delicious!

image

The burger of the day when we visited was a quinoa patty and had a very sweet taste, which we discovered was due to the fact that it contained dates. Neither Grandma JJ or I are big sweet mixed with savoury lovers (the idea of putting pineapple on a pizza has always seemed beyond weird to me); however, if you love that kinda thing, which I know a lot of people do, then this would definitely be the burger for you! The burger was accompanied by sweet potato fries that were cooked to perfection, deliciously creamy vegan mayonnaise and coleslaw which I definitely could have eaten by the spoonful!

image

For dessert, Grandma JJ ordered the sorbet which she absolutely loved; Matt ordered the chocolate brownie, and I ordered the cheesecake. Matt has a very mild nut allergy and forgot to check if the desserts contained nuts; unfortunately both mine and his did, so I had the verrrry difficult task of eating two equally delicious vegan desserts #itsahardlife! The Amala team were really lovely and offered to bring Matt another dessert even though it was our mistake; but he was very happy eating the sorbet that came on the side of his brownie.

image

Thank you very much to Amala for inviting us to their lovely restaurant; it’s always great to find a new vegan spot and it makes me so happy that you can now find a vegan restaurant almost everywhere you go!

BOURNEMOUTH VEGAN FAIR RECAP ▷▷▷

Now, before this post turns into a book, I wanna quickly say a couple of things about the festival! The organisation was impeccable, making the festival one of the best I’ve ever been to. The stall layout was extremely spacious meaning it was comfortable for stall-holders and customers alike, not to mention the location was incredible with a beautiful view of Bournemouth beach. We were really lucky as the weather stayed mostly dry and sunny, but let’s be honest, of course there was a little bit of rain, we are in England after all.

image

It was great to get to hang out with so many of my favourite veggie business owners, as well as discovering a few new businesses/charities (check out my Bournemouth vlog at the end of this post for interviews with You Cork It, Solkiki and F.R.I.E.N.D). As always, I also love meeting clothing line customers/blog readers and nothing is cooler than seeing people walking around in my designs; I really do feel so lucky to have such awesome customers!

image

BOURNEMOUTH PIZZA CO ▷▷▷

Finally, I can’t finish this post without telling you guys about Bournemouth Pizza Co. Lizzie, a lovely lady we got chatting to at the festival, told us about Bournemouth’s booming vegan food scene, and gave us a leaflet showing lots of places that have great vegan options. As soon as we saw that Bournemouth Pizza Co. offered a vegan cheese, we knew we had our Saturday night sorted! Pretty much as soon as they opened, we called to order: two large pizzas, a garlic bread, and a chocolate and banana calzone – is your mouth watering yet? I know mine is! Did I mention, they deliver? And this all came in at under £30? And it was insanely delicious. This place is basically heaven on earth for pizza lovers! Thank you very much Lizzie!!!!

VLOG OF THE WEEKEND ▷▷▷

We had such a great weekend hanging out with Grandma JJ, chilling by the beautiful sandy beach, meeting other lovely vegans and eating A LOT of delicious vegan food. I’m seriously considering a move to Bournemouth, as beautiful beaches coupled with a delicious and growing vegan food scene is basically everything I want in a place to live!

Be sure to check out my vlog of the weekend featuring our visit to Amala, our pizza night in, and a few interviews with awesome vegan business/charities at the Bournemouth Vegan Fair!

Dr Hadwen Trust

As most of you know, each month I pick an animal charity that I admire to donate £1 to for every sale I make. For the months of April and May 2016, I chose The Dr Hadwen Trust, a wonderful charity I came across at Vegfest Brighton earlier this year. As the UK’s leading non-animal medical research charity, The Dr Hadwen Trust fund and promote the development of techniques and procedures to replace the use of animals in biomedical research. This is a cause which I feel extremely passionate about and am therefore delighted to be able to support, with the help of all of my amazing customers!

After a few awesome festivals (Kent, Croydon & Vegfest Briston) we have so far managed to raise just under £200! Thank you so much to all of my lovely customers for helping to reach this amount. If you’d like to buy some awesome statement clothing at a discount and help us to raise even more money for The Dr Hadwen Trust, head to jadegreenvegan.com/shop before 31st May and enter the code ‘DRHADWEN10’ to get 10% off your purchase!

Exploring Brighton + eating at VBites vegan restaurant

Last week my friend Anna from the Ukraine came to stay with us for a few days and we spent our time exploring London, Kent and Brighton. Anna and I have so much in common, including our love for photography, animals and eating copious amounts of delicious vegan food; so as usual, we had such a great time, took crazy amounts of pictures, hung out with some adorable rescue animals and ate as much delicious vegan food as was humanly possible!

♥ BRIGHTON ♥

One of the highlights of Anna’s visit was our girly road trip to Brighton with Alfia, Maria and Natalie. We spent the day chilling out on the beach, shopping in the little boutiques by the seafront, and eating at the awesome VBites restaurant.

VBites ▷▷▷

By the time we arrived at Brighton after an early start and a loooong car journey filled with contact lense dramas (more deets in the vlog ;)), we were all feeling pretty hungry/some of us even a little hangry; so we decided to head straight to VBites and stuff our faces with delicious vegan food.

Natalie and Maria both ordered the Bean Burger, Alfia went for the Marinated Chicky, Anna got a Hotdog and after much deliberation (everything looked so good!) I decided to go for the Hickory Chick burger. We all absolutely loved our meals and would definitely head back to VBites next time we’re in Brighton!

Photoshoot ▷▷▷

Anna is an insanely talented photographer, so after we’d stuffed ourself with food and chilled out by the beach, we decided to pretend we were models for the day, take advantage of the beautiful scenery and do an awesome beachfront photoshoot for my clothing line. Here are some of my favourite pictures from the shoot that I’m so excited to share with you all.

All of these jumpers are available on my online store jadegreenvegan.com/shop.

♥ VLOG ♥

As well as taking crazy amount of pictures, we also made a vlog of Anna’s entire trip, so if you guys would like to see everything we got up to and all of the awesome vegan cafés/restaurants we visited be sure to watch our vlog ▷▷▷

WHAT I EAT IN A DAY | HCLF VEGAN

I have always been a big animal lover, so when I went vegan 2 years ago it was entirely for the animals. However, over the past 2 years I have become increasingly aware of the numerous environmental and health benefits of a vegan lifestyle. Lots of vegan influencers advocate eating a high carb low fat (hclf) vegan diet in order in order to feel and look your best, so I recently started reading The China Study in order to learn more. I’m only a few chapters in but have already been blown away by the impact a plant-based diet high in healthy carbohydrates and low in fat and protein can have on the body (and don’t worry, this still means you get perfectly enough protein for your body to function)! There’s so much I want to share with you all on this topic so I will definitely write an entire post about the book when I’ve finished reading it; in the meantime, suffice it to say that I have been so blown away by everything I’ve been learning that I have decided to start eating a high carb low fat vegan diet.

IMG_6507.JPG

In case this is the first time you’re hearing of it, a high carb low fat diet is one where you avoid processed foods and eat an abundance of natural, plant based food. On this diet, the majority of your calories are from healthy carbs (fruits, veggies, legumes, rice, potatoes and pasta), and the remainder are from small amounts of protein and healthy fats like avocado and nuts.

So, back to the point of this post, I know it can be tough knowing what to eat when you first go vegan, so I decided to record ‘What I Eat In A Day | hclf vegan’ videos to share some quick, easy, healthy and delicious vegan meal ideas with you all. You can watch my first video featuring the following meals below:

Breakfast ▷▷▷ green smoothie & strawberry smoothie
Lunch ▷▷▷ homemade chips, avocado & salad
Snack ▷ watermelon & passionfruit
Dinner ▷ spaghetti, veggie bolognese & tiger bread

If you have any questions on this topic I’d be happy to answer them as best I can, so please feel free to comment them under this post or on my YouTube video!

Las Iguanas Vegan Menu

Las Iguanas is an awesome chain restaurant that serves deliciously authentic South American food. A friend recently told me about their extensive vegetarian and vegan menu, and after having a read through I knew I had to check it out!

The vegetarian menu has lots of vegan options (marked with a v), as well as dishes that can be made vegan upon request (marked ‘ask for v’); so if you order one of the veggie dishes, be sure to ask for the vegan version.

Our waiter Tony was super friendly and happily chatted us through the veggie menu, as well as letting us know that Las Iguanas currently has an all day, every day happy hour to celebrate their 25th anniversary, which meant 2 for 1 cocktails all night long! As if 2 for 1 cocktails aren’t enough to make for a fun evening, Tony also showed us some pretty cool magic tricks, like how to balance a spoon, fork and toothpick on the tip of another tooth pick stuck in a pepper shaker (wow that was a mouthful!). I won’t show you how it’s done as I don’t want to ruin the magic, but needless to say our attempt wasn’t exactly magical…

image

STARTERS ▽▼▽▼▽

Matt and I are both big nacho fans, so to start we ordered two of the corn chip side dishes to share – holy guacamole and totopos.

The totopos (aka salsa dip) was delicious but holy guacamole was the guacamole amazing!! It was creamy, flavourful, and tasted amazing alongside some onions, tomato and salsa on a corn chip!

image

MAINS ▽▼▽▼▽

For main, we were torn between all of the vegan options but finally decided to share the three mushroom fajita and the veggie chilli.

The veggie chilli is made up of sweet potato, butternut squash and chickpeas, and is served with spring onion rice and tortilla wraps. It was absolutely delicious; however, the three mushroom fajita was a definite favourite for both of us! It is cooked with onions and peppers in a delicious sauce that is the perfect amount of spicy and tastes amazing wrapped up in a tortilla with some guacamole and salsa.

image

DESSERTS ▽▼▽▼▽

Dessert was definitely my favourite part of the meal, as I ordered the tembleque and it was one of the best desserts I’ve ever eaten! The creamy set coconut pudding is topped with mixed berries and a mango purée and tastes heavenly!

image

Matt ordered the mango sorbet and judging by the fact that there was none left by the end of the meal, I’d say he was a big fan!

image

The restaurant’s fun and friendly atmosphere coupled with amazing food and lovely staff meant we had a great evening! I will definitely be heading back soon for some more of that delicious guacamole and one (or maybe two!) of the coconut puddings!

Fortify Café Maidstone

After finding this list of six great vegan/vegan-friendly restaurants to visit in Kent, I checked out Fortify Café‘s extensive menu and instantly knew we had to check it out!

My mum and I visited the Café for lunch earlier this week and were warmly welcomed by James, the lovely owner, and his friendly staff. The restaurant, situated in Maidstone, has a great, cosy atmosphere and was full of packed full of customers throughout the afternoon – a testament to how delicious the food is!

The entire menu is 100% vegan and is an amazing example of how varied vegan food can be. Whether you fancy a toastie, a kebab, a burger, or a quiche – Fortify Café has got you covered! Needless to say, we were spoiled for choice but eventually managed to decide on what to order and everything was absolutely delicious!

DRINKS ▽▼▽▼▽

My mum ordered a freshly squeezed orange juice which she enjoyed so much that I didn’t even have a chance to snap a picture before it disappeared! I decided to go for a chocolate milkshake, which was creamy and delicious.

image

MAINS ▽▼▽▼▽

It was so hard to chose between all of the main course options but I finally decided on the falafel burger, whilst my mum went for the frittata. Both dishes were absolutely delicious and were served with huge, refreshing salads – the potato salad in particular was amazing!

image

DESSERT ▽▼▽▼▽

For dessert we shared the rocky road with vanilla ice-cream, which was honestly the best, creamiest ice-cream I have ever eaten! My mum also took advantage of the huge variety of dairy-free milks on offer and ordered an oat milk latte which she enjoyed very much!

Side note: How cute of an idea is ‘The Happy News’ newspaper?!

image

My mum and I absolutely loved everything we ate/drank at Fortify Café and fully intend to work our way through the rest of the menu! Thank you so much to James and his lovely team for a delicious meal.

You can also check out my short video about great vegan restaurants to visit in Kent here (featuring Fortify Café and Singh’s):

Singh’s Vegetarian Restaurant Gravesend

I recently came across this list of six restaurants to get great vegan food in Kent, and one of them was Singh’s Indian Restaurant in Gravesend.  As it is located really near my house and has a delicious looking menu, we decided we had to check it out asap!

Singh’s is a 100% vegetarian restaurant, with most items on the menu being vegan or easily veganisable (is that even a word?! If not it should be!). As if that’s not cool enough, the restaurant also offers an entirely vegan buffet every Saturday lunch time.

Last weekend, Matt and I headed to Singh’s for dinner, where we were warmly welcomed by the super friendly staff. They were more than happy to chat us through which menu items were vegan/could be veganised, and also made some excellent dish recommendations!

DRINKS ▽▼▽▼▽

Usually I’m not a big fan of tea; however Jaspreet – the lovely restaurant manager – recommended we try the masala tea with soy milk and I’m so glad we did as it was absolutely delicious! The tea is perfectly creamy and infused with mild spices making it both flavourful and refreshing.

image

STARTERS ▽▼▽▼▽

To start we ordered the snack platter so we could try out as many of the starters as possible. It includes samosas, a selection of pakoras and delicious potato fritters (both mine and Matt’s favourite) served with a tamarind chutney dip.

image

MAINS ▽▼▽▼▽

For main, we shared the sag aloo (a spinach and potato dish), veganised malai kofta (veggie dumplings with an onion and tomato curry), plain rice and garlic naan.

When Jaspreet explained that the naan bread was vegan, to say I was excited would be an understatement as naan bread isn’t typically vegan so I haven’t eaten it in a very long time! It definitely lived up to my expectations as it was fluffy, delicious and full of flavour! Matt and I also really enjoyed both of the main dishes, especially the malai kofta. This dumpling curry was unlike anything I’d ever tried before and I will definitely be ordering it next time we visit.

image

With a friendly atmosphere, lovely staff and absolutely delicious food, Singh’s is definitely somewhere we will be heading back to very often and I highly recommend you all try it out too! Thank you so much to Jaspreet and her wonderful team for a lovely evening.

PS – look out for a vlog of our visit coming to my youtube channel later this week!
