Berlin vegan guide

This summer, instead of our typical beach holiday, my mum and I decided to do something we’d wanted to do since I was in High School: travel around Europe! Our first stop was Berlin – voted the most vegan-friendly city in the world here, and with a wide range of vegan restaurants, a veggie/vegan hotel in its centre, and an entirely vegan supermarket, it’s not hard to see why.

Throughout our 3 day stay, we visited so many cool vegan places and I’m really excited to share those that we loved the most with you guys. Not only were the vegan options abundant, the city had so much culture and all of the people we met were really friendly and helpful, making our entire experience amazing. I can’t wait to go back and am already dreaming about my next trip!

▹▸HOTEL▹▸

We stayed in Almódovar Hotel, an organic, vegetarian spa hotel. It is located a short walk from Ostkreuz train station, from where the main tourist attractions are easily accessible.

The beautifully decorated modern rooms are extremely comfortable and spacious. The rooftop spa is equally stunning with a big relaxation area, a lush balcony and a glass-walled sauna overlooking the city. As part of our spa in the city package, my mum and I both had a full body massage and agreed that it was the most relaxing massage we’d ever had.

In addition to the beautiful facilities, the hotel also offered delicious breakfast, lunch and dinner menus. The buffet breakfast at the hotel was 100% vegetarian and mainly vegan, meaning we were spoilt for choice.

breakfast at almodovar hotel

There were delicious cakes, fruit salads, and my personal favourite: a vegan twist on traditional german cuisine. The staff were all so friendly and helpful, and our waitress recommended lots of vegan restaurants/cafes for us to visit during our trip.

My mum and I both loved our experience at Almodovar Hotel and next time I visit Berlin, I will definitely be staying here again!

▹▸RESTAURANTS▹▸

Almodovar Hotel Restaurant

On our first evening in Berlin, we were feeling super tired as we’d been up since 2am, so decided to eat in the restaurant in our hotel. We ordered bread with a red pepper almond dip to start and paella to share for our main. Both dishes were amazing!!!! Unfortunately I didn’t manage to snap a picture of the paella, but it was filled with veggies and faux meat sausages and was by far one of the best paellas I’ve ever had. The red pepper almond dip was also delicious – I am definitely going to try to recreate it at home and if it turns out well I’ll be sure to share the recipe with you guys.

Sfizy Veg Pizzeria

vegan pizzeria sfizy veg

On our second evening we visited Sfizy veg, a vegan pizzeria recommended by one of the lovely waitresses in our hotel. It was a little far from the centre and was so busy that we had to wait a while for a table but the food was so delicious that it was definitely worth the trip. Once again dark lighting + iPhone camera made for very bad photos, so I unfortunately don’t have any to show you guys but rest assured that my pizza and my mum’s spaghetti pomodoro both went down very well. The cheese on my pizza was extremely dairy-like so if you’re newly vegan/missing the taste of dairy then you would absolutely love it! Whilst I really enjoyed the pizza, this meal confirmed to me that after just over a year as a vegan I do not miss dairy at all!

▹▸SUPERMARKET/CAFE▹▸

Veganz aka vegan heaven, is an entirely vegan supermarket chain that stocks everything from fresh fruits and veggies, to vegan cheese and mayo, to vegan pizzas, to vegan dog food. How freaking cool is that!? Oh, and as if that’s not enough, the branch we visited also has a vegan cafe annnd on the second level, there is a vegan shoe shop and a vegan restaurant! Basically, I never wanted to leave.

veganz

We bought lots of treats for ourselves like vegan ice cream and yoghurts, and also decided to get some vegan dog treats for Poppy, Panda, Teddy and Kitty. Like all dog treats, they look kinda gross but I’m sure the dogs will love them.

On our last day in Berlin, we had veggie burgers and green juices for lunch in the Veganz cafe and they were so yummy! I really wish we had a Veganz in the UK as it would be amazing to have somewhere where you can eat delicious vegan food and do your weekly shopping. Veganz – come to the UK!!!

Overall, my mum and I had an amazing time in Berlin. I’m already planning my next trip there as I can’t wait to take my boyfriend and all of my veggie/vegan best friends to all of the cool vegan places we explored.

Have any of you guys been to Berlin? I’d love to hear if you guys have any cool vegan finds to add to this list!

Tibits vegetarian and vegan buffet, London

I absolutely love sharing all of my favourite places to eat out with you guys, as whenever I’m looking for a cool new place to eat out, I always check other bloggers recommendations. As well as reading a menu on line, I find it’s also so helpful to hear which places other people love and for what reasons! So, today I am gonna share with you guys one of my favourite places to eat in London ▷►▹▸

Tibits Veggie/Vegan buffet located just off of Regent Street

Ever since we discovered Tibits around 6 months ago, it has become mine and my BFF Alfia’s go to place to hang out and eat at after work. All of the food is veggie, most of it is vegan, and everything I’ve tried so far is delicious.

tibits buffet

Tibits operates a pay by weight system, meaning that if you’re a big carb lover like Alfia and me, it can end up being fairly expensive but in my opinion, totally worth it!

Not only is the food delicious (the okra in breadcrumbs are my fave and we both love and tofu & sundried tomato pasta) but the atmosphere is also super chilled making it a really fun place to hang out. The outdoor seating area is surrounded by fairy lights which look SO pretty on a warm summer evening; whilst inside, the dimmed lighting and modern decor makes for a super cosy atmosphere.

tibias vegan restaurant

For desert, we always share the lemon cake. And when I say share, I mean Alfia says she’s full but starts eyeing up my cake as soon as it arrives and inevitably ends up eating half of it, so now I always ask for two forks whether Alfia admits she’s gonna make room for some cake or not ;).

If you love great food and a cool atmosphere, I would definitely recommend checking out Tibits, it is one major party in your mouth!

Interview with Sarah from Wildgypsycaravan.com

I haven’t shared an interview post with you guys in a while, so today I am extremely excited to share my interview with the beautiful inside and out Sarah from wildgypsycaravan.com.

Sarah and I initially connected on instagram and I immediately knew I had to interview her for the blog as she is such a genuinely kind person with an abundance of plant-based knowledge to share. Sarah is raising a beautiful vegan family and documents their compassionate lifestyle on her blog and instagram in an incredibly authentic and relatable way. Her lovely little family has also embraced a life of minimalism, something which I find so fascinating and inspiring!  I am so glad I got to know Sarah better through this interview; I’m sure you are all going to love her story as much as I do ▷►▹▸

Q: How did your vegan journey start, what were your main inspirations and influences?
A: As a child I was always strange around meat and was on and off vegetarian all throughout my childhood. When I was in college I watched the documentary Food Inc., and never touched white meat (the only thing I was still consuming) ever again. I was vegetarian for about 7 years and continuously wanted to make the leap to veganism but was having a hard time letting go of the cheese, the only animal product still in my diet. I was always looking for a reason to dislike it. I began to research animal treatment and welfare, as well as health related problems caused by animal products. My first step towards veganism came after I watched “Forks Over Knives.” I was still having trouble letting go of the cheese, mostly because I could never do it for myself (being vegan for health). One day in a small local bookstore in a seaport town I came across a book called “The Lucky Ones” by Jenny Brown who owns Woodstock Farm Animal Sanctuary. It gave me all the reasons I needed and more to swear off dairy for good and turned me into an ethical vegan. When it comes from an ethical place, being vegan is never difficult for me. That was 2 years ago!

Q: It’s so great you’re raising a beautiful vegan daughter, tell us about how you and your partner came to raise a vegan family?
A: My husband (Jim) and I are both vegan, and I am so grateful for that. We’ve both found so much joy and inspiration from being vegan and we wouldn’t change that for the world. We’ve been together since we were 15 years old and have grown together as individuals and as a couple. We both came from non-vegan families, but with each others support we have found and embraced this lifestyle. We lived in San Diego for a time after college and that is where we began our path into veganism. I was already not eating meat and after researching animal products, Jim followed after me and became vegetarian. He immediately began dropping weight and after we both went vegan together, he lost 70lbs and cured his chronic psoriasis which would often overtake parts of his body throughout his teenage years. That’s all the proof we needed to never look back. When we became pregnant we knew that we would never raise our daughter any other way. We want her to grow up being kind and compassionate to all living beings, have the opportunity to be in glowing beautiful health her whole life, and to hopefully inspire others to do the same.

Q: Have you got any tips for someone planning on raising a vegan family?
A: Be certain in your decision to raise your family vegan, regardless of what other family members or society thinks. I know that this is different to a lot of people but I also feel extremely enlightened by veganism. Children are born with a desire to be kind and to love. They do not want to harm living beings. This makes the most sense to us and I only hope to inspire others to leave the animals off their plates and to find a more compassionate way of existing. A lot of people are fearful of their child being different, but I feel in my heart that when a child is raised that way from birth, and have an understanding of right and wrong, they will always do the right thing and encourage others to. Being educated on nutrition and animal welfare is the best thing you can do as a parent so you can radiate confidence in your choices.

Q: I love when you share pictures of your gorgeous little doggy on your insta (crazy dog lady here!) does he follow a veggie diet too?
A: Our fur baby Lavender is 100% vegan and thriving off of it. There are so many back and forths about companion animals being vegan but I fully support one for doggies. We’re totally obsessed with her and want her to have the longest, healthiest life possible. I’ve seen too many people feeding their dogs hamburgers and other animals products, only to have them suffer in the end. She’s so happy and so healthy and when we take her to get her hair cut, we hear nothing but how she has the best, shiniest coat around…yep- it’s all the veggies, fruit and lentils she eats! She eats a more rounded diet than most toddlers (ha!). Lavender loves blueberries, carrots, apples, and oatmeal :).

Q: It’s great that you share your compassionate lifestyle on your blog and instagram in such an authentic and relatable way. Tell us about the inspiration behind your blog and insta.
A: I love connecting with other people who are so passionate about living a healthy, kind lifestyle and I get so much joy from writing my blog, Wild Gypsy Caravan and curating my Instagram. It’s really all too fun! I’ve always had a passion for creating…I feel most in my “zone” when i’m doing something with my hands or making beautiful visuals. I fell into blogging in college for something completely unrelated and since then it has totally evolved. I love sharing my lifestyle so I can inspire others to live wildly authentic, enjoy every moment of their lives, and to do so while being kind to this earth and the beings we share it with. I have met so many wonderful people via my instagram and blog and I hope to continue to as we ride this crazy adventure called life. Wild Gypsy Caravan is quite literally our home, a 200 square foot renovated FEMA trailer. It’s stories and inspiration from inside our home and from wherever we make our home. We’re a traveling family seeking beauty and happiness in the every day.

Q: In addition to being vegan, your family has embraced minimalism, tell us more about this.
A: Our family found minimalism about a year and a half ago. We were drowning in debt and couldn’t figure out why. We both had Master’s degrees, jobs, and we kept upgrading our life along with it. Apartment to condo to BIG house. It seemed like all the right things we “should” be doing. Then we realized, why? Why are we on this endless path to working far too many hours only to retire? We wanted to spend our time together now. As silly as this sounds, Jim and I are madly in love and want to be with each other…all the time (crazy, right?). So we figured out how we could. By having and desiring less, we get more time in return. When our time isn’t spent making money to consume things that only bring temporary enjoyment, we get our lives back. We need less money now to live a fulfilled life and we make that money by doing things we like to do. This is still a process and we hope that in a years time we’ll be able to hit the road and live untethered full time. We want our daughter to experience having both her parents around all the time and us having wild adventures together.

pineapple

Q: All of your recipes look incredibly delicious. If you could eat only one meal for the rest of your life, what would it be?
A: Oh my goodness! This is SO hard. I have a total obsession with mangoes and I could eat boat loads of them. I would probably choose those over most things! As far as a prepared dish it’s a toss up between chocolate peanut butter “nice cream” or the not-so-healthy path of BBQ pulled Jackfruit sandwich with pickles! ::drool:: Oh man…I also LOVE fresh bread and olives. See, this was too hard for me. 😹

Q: Since going vegan I have experienced so many amazing health benefits; what positive effects has adopting the vegan diet had on you?
A: I have struggled with weight my entire life and since becoming vegan I have completely changed my relationship with food. I overeat less often and I have stopped that awful cycle of eat, guilt, eat, guilt. It has redefined what food means to me and I am more grateful and in control of it than I have ever been before. I continue to lose weight (50lbs or so) while eating vegan and by sticking to whole foods from the earth rather than anything processed. I have noticed my skin is always clear and my energy levels are always good, even after a meal. My husband healed his psoriasis and lost a ton of weight (70lbs).

vegan wrap

Q: Describe a day in the life of Sarah & Jim.
A: Wake up, stretch, drink some lemon water, make a big breakfast loaded with fruit. These days we usually run out to our tiny house to work on it (we’re super anxious to move in!). If it’s the weekend we plan some crazy adventure like a day trip somewhere new or have a picnic. Eat a bunch of mangoes for lunch (or sub any fruit!). Have playtime with Stella and Lavender, work on our Etsy shop, make a warm meal for dinner, sit and and sip tea on our porch under our amber lights on the Wild Gypsy Caravan. Snuggle and read Stella a book. Fall asleep talking to each other. Rinse, repeat.

Q: Do you have a favourite inspirational quote to leave us with?
A: “Live in the sunshine, swim in the sea, drink the wild air.” -Ralph Waldo Emerson. I created a piece of art to this quote about a year ago and it hangs over our bed. It reminds me to live fearless and with intention and adventure every day. It inspires me to live differently- rather that be veganism, minimalism or to live outside the box.

Thank you so much Sarah for sharing your story. Be sure to check out Sarah’s awesome blog at: wildgypsycaravan.com to follow her family’s beautiful journey ♥

Vegan pancake recipe

Without a doubt, one of my favourite ways to start the day is with a big stack of delicious vegan pancakes. This recipe is one of my all time favourites and is absolutely perfect for those lazy Sunday breakfast-in-bed kinda days. Not only are these pancakes insanely yummy, but they are also way healthier than their non-vegan alternative – so major win-win!!

5 reasons to adopt your next best friend

A common misconception that dissuades people from adoption is that most dogs in rescue centres have behavioural issues. In reality, the vast majority of dogs are there through no fault of their own and fit perfectly into family life. Since I started volunteering at Foal Farm, I have seen first hand the wide variety of amazing dogs available for adoption: lazy/energetic, playful/calm, independent/loyal, puppies/oaps, big/small, purebreds/cross breeds – there is a dog to suit everyone. With such a diverse range of dogs available for adoption, I’m confident in saying that there is a dog perfectly suited to your family and your lifestyle sitting in a rescue centre near you, just waiting for you to come and give them their happily ever after. In case you’re not already convinced, here are my top 5 reasons to adopt your next best friend.

All pictures featured in this post are of dogs at Foal Farm who are currently waiting for their forever home. If you think that could be with you, you can contact Foal Farm here or fill out an adoption application form here.

1. The special bond you form is incomparable

There is something extremely special about the bond a rescuer forms with a rescue dog. My mum went to collect our rescue dog Teddy and the loyalty and adoration he feels towards my mum is incredible. Dogs without a doubt know when you’ve rescued them, and in return shower you with a lifetime of love and loyalty. What could be better?

rescue collie
Gypsy is a beautiful & extremely special dog who I’ve completely fallen in love with, whoever adopts her is one very lucky human

2. You get to skip the difficult puppy stage

Whilst it is undeniable that puppies are adorable, there is nothing cute about coming home to a house full of wee and poo, being the chew toy for a teething puppy, or having your brand new GHDs bitten up (I’m looking at you Panda). What I’m trying to say is, puppies are hard work, so one major advantage of rescuing a slightly older dog is that you can skip the puppy stage and get straight to the good stuff.

3. Rescuing saves lives

For each dog you rescue, not only are you saving that dog’s life, but you are also freeing up shelter space for another dog to have the chance to be saved from euthanasia and find their forever home. So basically, you get a BFF and save lives. What’s not to love?!

Rescue lurcher
Bunny is a beautiful & bouncy little girl who was rescued from a pound, she is super friendly & has a tail that won’t stop wagging

4. You can find the perfect companion for you and your family

Most good recuse centres spend a lot time getting to know the families who come to adopt a dog. This means that they will be able to pair you up with a dog that will suit your lifestyle and fit perfectly into your family. Plus, rescue centres are so committed to ensuring their dogs find a forever home, that they offer ongoing support to adopters should you need any help/advice in the future.

jack russel rescue
Dolly is a cute and energitic jack russel terrier who loves to play fetch but also loves to snuggle up for kisses and cuddles

5.  Rescuing feels amazing!

Rescuing a dog is honestly one of the most rewarding things you could ever do. Seeing a dog that hasn’t had the best start in life happily running around in a field or cuddled up with you on the sofa is an incredibly special thing. It’s pretty amazing knowing that you were able to give a dog a second chance and provide them with their happily ever after.

The most delicious green smoothie recipe

First thing this morning (aka 10am) I went for my first run since coming home from uni a couple of weeks ago. 30 mins later, dripping with sweat, and walking home with one very tired out dog, I was majorly craving a big, delicious smoothie.

I wasn’t planning on creating a recipe for the blog, so just threw my smoothie staples into the blender and added some of my favourite superfood powders. However, it turned out to be one of the most delicious, milkshake-like smoothies I’d ever tasted so I couldn’t not share it with you guys.

vegan milkshake recipe

Before we get onto the recipe, I thought I would share some of the reasons why I love adding Maca powder and Spirulina to my smoothie, so that when you’re enjoying its creamy yumminess, you can also rest assured that it is filling you with healthy goodness.

Maca powder‘s amazing benefits include: being rich in calcium and iron, increasing energy levels and being great at balancing your mood; whilst Spirulina is a great source of protein, iron and calcium.

Now… onto the recipe.

WARNING: this smoothie is so addictive, I had to make my second of the day to drink on the way to go bowling with Matt and my gorgeous little cousins. I hope you all had an awesome weekend, enjoy the recipe lovely people :).

Ethos Foods, London

One of my favourite things about working in London is checking out lots of different veggie/vegan restaurants in the evenings. Last week, my veggie friends and I dragged 2 of our meat-loving friends to Ethos – a meat-free buffet near Oxfords Circus – for a big veggie night out. Not only was the food a big hit with everyone, but I’m also told by my carnivore friends that the vegan wine was on point.

The restaurant has a pay by weight system, which if you’re a major carb fan like me, can result in it being a little pricey; or in the case of one of my non-veggie friends, mean that one non-carbed-up plate isn’t enough to prepare you for a big night out ;). Nevertheless, the food was delicious and I was also obsessed with the incredible decor; we’re talking indoor trees, fairy lights and marble tables. So. Cool.

Overall, we all really enjoyed our visit, so if you love eating great food in restaurants with a really cool vibe, I definitely recommend you check Ethos out.

My favourite vegan products from Lush

Not only do Lush products smell insanely heavenly but the company also has great ethical principles, and any brand that promotes kindness to animals and uses natural ingredients whilst creating amazing products is definitely one I want to support! All of Lush‘s products are vegetarian, and those that are vegan display the vegan logo so are super easy to find. I have tried a variety of Lush cosmetics and these three below are my absolute favourites so I wanted to share them with all of you.

lush products vegan

The YUMMY MUMMY shower gel was a limited edition for mother’s day, so I have majorly stocked up on them before the stores run out! It smells so delicious and leaves your skin feeling smooth and healthy so if you manage to get your hands on one of these, I would definitely recommend it.

yummy mummy lush

REHAB is hands down my favourite shampoo that I have ever used! It is so nourishing and leaves my hair smelling absolutely incredible.

rehab lush

Finally, saving the best until last, the R&B hair moisturiser is an absolute godsend! Since I started getting my hair ombred last year, it has needed a lot of extra TLC and this leave in conditioner definitely does the trick. After washing my hair, I rub a pea sized amount through the ends and it helps to create healthy, natural curls.

R&B Lush

The combination of REHAB and R&B has made my hair feel so healthy and has restored my natural curls, meaning I barely ever use heat on it anymore which is amazing! I really cannot recommend Lush products enough, and especially these three!

Do you guys use Lush? What are your favourite cruelty-free cosmetic brands?

New Horizon, Exeter

In the four years that I have been studying at the University of Exeter, I must have walked past The New Horizon Cafe countless times but had never given it a second glance. However, a couple of weeks ago, a sign saying ‘most of our dishes are vegetarian or vegan‘ caught my eye, and I decided I had to check it out. Two weeks later and it is safe to say I am now a regular.

Their menu is filled with a range of delicious Mediterranean food which is available to eat in or to takeaway. My favourite dish is the Mèze plate, as it is the perfect combination of flavours.

new horizon

The falafel pita is also amazing, especially for those days where you fancy your lunch on-the-go. The falafels are cooked to perfection and the pita is stuffed full of salad and seasoned with a delicious mixture of sauces.

The Cafe’s relaxed and friendly atmosphere makes it the perfect chill out spot. This is definitely one of my favourite places to eat in Exeter and I can’t recommend it enough.

Vegan chocolate flapjack recipe

Ever since I tried Trek‘s delicious flapjacks, I have been determined to create my own version to share with all of you. With the help of my not so secret favourite ingredient – lotus spread – which basically makes everything better, I have created these little bites of yumminess ▽▼▽▼▽.

vegan chocolate flapjacks

I’m seriously so addicted to these delicious little treats and they’ve also been a big hit in my uni flat so I’m sure you guys are going to love them too! I’m off to make another batch of these babies for my road-trip home this weekend, so here’s the recipe, hope you all love them as much as I do!

  • 1 bar of dark vegan chocolate

Recipe

  • Put the oats + butter in a bowl and mix together with your hands
  • Add in the sugar, golden syrup + lotus spread and mix in with your hands
  • Spread mixture into a rectangle on a baking tray covered in baking paper
