24 HOURS IN A KENNEL FUNDRAISER UPDATE

Matt and I are currently travelling through Australia and it is absolutely beautiful here (look out for lots of exciting travel posts/videos coming soon). However, we’ve been so busy and haven’t had a good internet connection (we’re talking 20 minutes to upload one instagram picture!) that I haven’t had a chance to update you guys on how my night in a kennel fundraiser turned out.

To describe the experience, I thought it’d be best to share with you my instagram post from the day after the event, as it captures how I felt about the experience whilst the emotions were still raw:

▹▸▹▸ MY INSTAGRAM POST

Rescue dog in kennel

“As Maria, Natalie & I left the kennels last night, there wasn’t a dry eye in sight. Leaving this little baby in her kennel after spending 24 hours together was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. Although I volunteer every weekend and (nearly) always manage focus to on the positive, spending 24 hours in a kennel with a dog, getting to know what it’s like to be them, puts everything into a completely different perspective. You get to see how much every little interaction, every little treat through the kennel bars matters. You see how much an hour walk means to someone who spends the other 23 hours of their day alone in their kennel. One of the things that gets to me the most is that whilst my night in the kennel was one of my worst nights sleep; snuggled up in the bottom of my sleeping bag, it was probably one of Dolly’s best.

If you think you could spare a couple of hours each week, PLEASE go to your local rescue centre & volunteer to walk the dogs. It really does mean more than you could ever imagine & the bonds you form with the dogs will be something you’ll treasure for life. I’ve also made some of the loveliest human friends whilst volunteering as I’ve found that the people who work with/choose to spend their free time with rescue animals tend to be some of the most compassionate & caring people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet.

Before I end this massive essay, I wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has donated & helped us break our target of £1000 – you have made a huge difference to these dogs’ lives & I thank you for that from the bottom of my heart 🐶💗”

▹▸▹▸ VLOG OF THE FUNDRAISER

I filmed a short vlog of the fundraiser, so if you’d like to get a glimpse of what it’s like to spend 24 hours in a kennel, you can check that out below:

I am so pleased to announce that we raised a grand total of £1,400 for Foal Farms’ dogs, which is absolutely incredible! I was completely overwhelmed and humbled by all of the support we received throughout the process; it is so heart-warming to see how many kind, caring and generous people are out there. Not only did we receive so many donations that we were able to break our target, we were also featured in the local Newspaper as ‘Dog Crazy pals’ (life complete haha!) which all jokes aside will help raise awareness of the plight of rescue dogs and hopefully encourage people to consider rescuing their next best friend. For me, one of the greatest things to come out of this experience (that may or may not have made me cry a little) was hearing from friends and strangers that our fundraiser had inspired them to put in an application to volunteer at their local rescue centre.

I am beyond ecstatic with the impact our fundraiser has had and am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have had this experience. I want to say a final huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported us, whether it be through sharing our posts, donating, or even making a change in your own life to help rescue shelters near you. Sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

FED by water review

Ever since we got back from New York & Las Vegas where we had some incredible vegan pizzas, Matt and I have been on the hunt for a reeeally good vegan pizza restaurant. When Matt heard that FED by water serves ‘the best vegan pizza in London’, we knew we had to check it out.

FED is a cool little restaurant in Dalston that offers both vegan and non-vegan Italian cuisine, making it the perfect place to hang out with non-vegan friends/family. I love that this concept restaurant also aims to spread awareness about the nutritional importance of pure water because who doesn’t love chilled, clean water and all of the amazing things drinking it in abundance can do for our bodies?!

Now, onto the mouth-watering food…

▹▸▹▸ PIZZAS

I ordered a vegan cheese margherita with portobello mushrooms and red onions, whilst Matt ordered the ‘Silly’, a vegan cheese pizza topped with broccoli and soya sausage. We both agreed that the toppings and cheese were incredible and the crust was perfectly crispy.

▹▸▹▸ DESSERT

We managed to save a little bit of room for dessert and shared the chocolate mousse which was rich, creamy and just generally delicious!

We both really enjoyed the whole meal so next time we’re on that side of London, I’m sure we’ll be heading back to FED.

Manna restaurant review

I know I’m ridiculously late with this post, like over a month late, but there has been so much going on and it wasn’t until I was looking through photos on my phone the other day that I realised I still hadn’t told you guys about the insanely good birthday dinner Matt treated me to at Manna!

Manna is a beautifully elegant restaurant in Primrose Hill that offers a 100% vegan menu. How incredible is that?! As it was a birthday dinner, we decided to go all out and order starters, mains and desserts, and every single course was delicious.

Apologies in advance for the poor quality photos, Manna had some major mood lighting going on!

▹▸▹▸ STARTERS

The falafel slider starter was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had; it was so good that I could have eaten 3 or 4 okay 5 of these burgers for a main course! The burger was delicious and perfectly complemented by all of the toppings and the wholemeal bun. Matt was also obsessed with fluffy  yet crispy potato wedges it was served with!

▹▸▹▸ MAINS

For main course, I ordered the spaghetti and veatballs and it was delicious! The spaghetti was cooked to perfection whilst the tomato sauce and veatballs were incredibly flavoursome.

Matt ordered the bangers and mash and judging by his entirely empty plate at the end of the meal, I’d say it was a big hit!

▹▸▹▸ DESSERT

Whilst the starters and mains were both delicious, the highlight of the meal was hands down the birthday cake dessert. The vice cream & cookie semi-freddo was honestly the best dessert I have ever eaten. EVER! We’re talking crumbly cookie dough filled with layers of ice cream topped with berries – OH MY GOSH! It was absolutely insane.

I can’t wait for our next trip to Manna, mainly but not exclusively so that I can order a vice cream & cookie semi-freddo all to myself!

Vegan eats in Birmingham – Mr Singh’s Pizza

Matt is moving to London next week (eeek – too exciting!) so I am spending this weekend in Birmingham helping him pack up his house (read: watching Matt pack whilst I chill out on the sofa watching The Mindy Project)! In-between packing/TV watching, we are spending the weekend eating at our favourite veggie and vegan restaurants in Birmingham. Tomorrow we will be heading to Bistro 1847 for Sunday Lunch which I am so excited for; but tonight we decided to have a lazy night in and order delivery from our favourite takeaway – Mr Singh’s Pizza. Mr Singh’s is an entirely vegetarian restaurant that also has a lot of delicious vegan options. Hand’s down, their vegan pizzas are going to be the main thing I miss in Birmingham.

I have never shared Mr Singh’s on the blog before, as I’m usually too excited to tuck in and start eating to take pictures of the pizza. However, as this is my last one for the foreseeable future, I managed to muster up enough self control to take some pictures so I could share these delicious pizzas with you all.

mr singh's pizza

As always, I ordered a large vegan cheese margarita pizza with mushrooms and red onions, and Matt ordered an XL vegan cheese margarita! Not only are these pizzas insanely delicious but they’re also extremely affordable and a lot cheaper than all of the mainstream pizza deliveries, with a 14 inch XL pizza costing only £7.99 – say whaaat?!

If you live in Birmingham or ever find yourself visiting, Mr Singh’s is an absolute must-try!

Thank you for all of the great pizzas Mr Singh’s – if you could open a restaurant in London, I would be eternally grateful.

Top tips for going vegan in 2015

As today is the last day of 2014, I’ve been reflecting on the past year and all of its ups and downs. Transitioning into a vegan lifestyle and starting this blog is by far one of the best things that has happened to me this year. Not only am much healthier now, but I also feel so much happier in the knowledge that I am living a cruelty-free lifestyle. I feel really fortunate to have been able to connect with so many like-minded people through my blog and instagram, and have loved promoting a kind lifestyle. Over the past 6 months, I have received a lot of questions from people considering the vegan lifestyle, particularly with regards to how I made the transition and if I’ve faced any challenges. So for my final post of 2014, I thought it’d be fun to share my top 5 tips for transitioning into a vegan lifestyle.top tips for going vegan

Before I get into my top tips, I thought I’d share a funny little story with you all. Before publishing a post, I usually ask someone to proofread it for me to catch any silly spelling mistakes I’ve inevitably made. This post’s proofreader, who wishes to remain anonymous, suggested I change ‘the lifestyle’ to ‘the vegan lifestyle’ in the opening paragraph as apparently it refers to swingers (I’m not sure how they know this ;)?!) At first I thought they were pulling my leg but after a quick google, it turns out it’s true. So if you’re looking for some interesting NYE reading, just google ‘the lifestyle’. Anyway, back to my top 5 tips for transitioning into a vegan lifestyle; I hope you all find them helpful!

Visit your local health food store and get creative in the kitchen

One of my favourite things about going vegan has been learning how to cook. I used to be what you would call a ‘junk-food vegetarian’, surviving on a whole lot of pizza and pasta. However, I love that I now have a reason to get into the kitchen and create healthier and cruelty-free versions of some of my old favourite dishes. I have also loved discovering lots of exciting new health foods which has led to an improvement in my overall wellbeing – a huge but unexpected benefit of this lifestyle.

Educate yourself about the meat, dairy and egg industries

As a lifelong vegetarian who didn’t use any products that were tested on animals or wear any leather clothing, I thought my lifestyle was about as cruelty-free as they come. However, when I started to expose myself to the hidden truths behind the dairy and egg industries, I couldn’t believe I hadn’t gone vegan sooner! Understanding the cruelty of factory farming, as well as the health and sustainability benefits of a vegan lifestyle will give you a good foundation for making the transition. Personally, just doing some online reading was enough to make me want to go vegan but if you’re looking to learn more about a vegan lifestyle there are some great documentaries out there such as: Cowspiracy, Forks over Knives, Earthlings and Vegucated.

Go as slow as you need

Having been a vegetarian for the majority of my life, I didn’t find the transition into a vegan diet too difficult. However, I can imagine that for a meat eater it would be a huge change. I started with ‘vegan mondays’ that quickly turned into vegan tuesdays, wednesdays and before I knew it, I was eating entirely vegan. I think it’s really important to make the transition in whichever way works best for you, whether you’re able to cut out all animal products straight away, or whether it takes you a couple of weeks, or a couple of months.

Ask questions and do lots of research

I love connecting with other vegans, as being newly vegan in a non-vegan world can be quite daunting, so it’s really nice to chat to other people who share your passion and can offer advice. I have really enjoyed  getting to know some lovely and inspiring vegans through my JGV interview series which you can check out here. I’d also recommend reading lots of vegan blogs for inspiration on everything from cruelty-free fashion, to vegan recipes, to tips on the best places to eat out. One of my favourite sources of vegucatation is Alicia Silverstone’s website The Kind Life and I would highly recommend you check it out.

Never let the haters get you down

There will inevitably be people who disagree with your lifestyle choice and want to let you know about it. I don’t like to get into negative conversations, so whenever possible I try to briefly explain to people why I chose this lifestyle and that it works for me and then change the subject. However, if people don’t want to accept it, I’ve  found that the best way to deal with it is, in the words of the absolute goddess that is Taylor Swift, to ‘Shake it off!’

Taylor-Swift-Shake-It-Off

I hope these tips are helpful for any of you considering going vegan and if you have any more tips or even questions, feel free to leave a comment in the box below. I hope you all have a great NYE and I’m looking forward to expanding the blog and connecting with even more of you in 2015!

Garlic and breadcrumb stuffed mushroom recipe

In my final few weeks at uni before the christmas break I had lots of deadlines to hand in, so didn’t want to spend hours slaving away in the kitchen (read: I’d rather be procrastinating watching Revenge/The Mindy Project). I decided to create some nutritious but easy to cook lunch/dinner recipes and my favourite by far was the garlic and breadcumb stuffed mushrooms. These little bundles of yumminess have become one of my staple meals over the past couple of weeks, and I was so excited to make them for my mum on my first day back at home (she loved them too). Not only are they delicious but they only take 30 mins from preparation to plate – ideal!garlic stuffed mushroom recipe

One mushroom served with salad makes a great lunch time snack; however, this dish can also be made into a hearty dinner by serving two mushrooms with the salad and maybe even healthy skinny chips. The below recipe is a lunch serving for one but can be increased depending on how hungry you are!

Ingredients

1 portobello mushroom

1 slice of granary, seeded bread

1/4 red onion

1 garlic clove

1 table spoon garlic oil

Ground black pepper

Paprika

1 avocado

Salad of your choice

Instructions

  1. Preheat the oven to 180 degrees celsius
  2. Peel the portobello mushroom and pull out the stalk
  3. Chop the red onion and garlic into small chunks then fry in garlic oil until crispy
  4. Chop the crusts off of the bread and break the remainder into pea-size pieces
  5. Mix the bread pieces into the oil before spooning the breadcrumbs, garlic and onion into the portobello mushroom
  6. Place the mushroom on a baking tray, sprinkle some black pepper on top and cook in the oven for 20 minutes
  7. Whilst the mushroom is cooking, cut open the avocado and mash with a fork until smooth
  8. Mix some black pepper and paprika into the avocado
  9. Take the mushroom out of the oven and serve onto a bed of lettuce (/salad of your choice) with the mashed avocado
  10. Enjoy!!

Vegusto

One of the main things a lot of new vegans struggle with is missing cheese; as a life long vegetarian, cheese was a staple ingredient in most of my meals so cutting it out required a big adjustment in my diet, one I was more than happy to make, but a big one nonetheless. In my first few months of being vegan, I tried a couple of cheese alternatives but none came close to the real thing so I decided to give up looking. However, when I visited the USA this summer I tried Daiya cheese and have been majorly craving it ever since. In a moment of desperation I even emailed Daiya to see if they would send some to the UK; shockingly, they politely declined. I therefore decided to restart my quest for a good non-dairy cheese and stumbled upon the Vegusto website. I could not be happier about finding this little gem, as their cheese is amazing and I have now become a regular customer!

vegusto cheese bagel

Aside from their award winning cheese, Vegusto stocks a range of vegan products that use 100% natural, sustainable and healthy ingredients. The first thing I tried from Vegusto was the No-Moo Melty cheese. I am absolutely in love with it, as not only does it make a great bagel filler, it is also the perfect pizza topping. Check out my Superfood tortilla base pizza recipe for a healthy and fun idea of how to make use of this yummy cheese ▼▽▼▽▼

After falling in love with Vegusto cheese, my boyfriend ordered me a few surprises from their website including the delicious biona organic chocolate spread and a dairy-free advent calendar. I am a huge fan of the chocolate spread as it is the perfect topper for pretty much anything: wholegrain toast, biscuits, sliced banana. You name it, I’ll smother it in chocolate spread and eat it.

As far as the vegan advent calendar goes, I am SO excited to get started on this bad boy. Bring on December ▼▽▼▽▼

If you’re looking for a cruelty-free alternative to some of your favourite meals without compromising on taste, I’d highly recommend you head on over to the Vegusto website. They have so many more foods I am looking forward to trying, so I will definitely keep you all posted. I’d love to hear if you’ve tried any of their products and if so which is your favourite?
