BUDAPEST VEGAN GUIDE

Budapest is an awesome city to visit, as not only does it have an abundance of delicious, reasonably priced vegan food; it also has lots of unique things to do. I’ve compiled this city guide of all of the food, attraction & accommodation highlights of our trip to save you guys time when planning your visit. I hope you have an awesome time in Budapest!

WHAT TO EAT ▹▸▹

GREAT BISTRO BUDAPEST

Great Bistro Budapest came with very high recommendations from my lovely instagram audience, so we were very excited to discover that it was located just a short walk away from our hotel. It’s a fully vegan restaurant with cute decor and delicious food which definitely lived up to and even exceeded our high expectations (evidenced by the fact that we visited three times during our trip)!

The chickpea omelette with tofu bacon was both of our favourite dish. In addition to the perfectly crisped tofu bacon, the flavourful omelette was brimming with salad, vegan cheese and a delicious creamy sauce.

Great Bistro Budapest

Accross our various visits, we also ate a tofu bacon sandwich, pancakes, tomato pasta and risotto, all of which were delicious. But what really stole the show for me was the traditional hungarian dessert (I ate it twice in one day!!) I’m not sure exactly what the ingredients are, but it tasted like chocolate and traditional custard and had the most delicious pieces of sponge cake in the bottom.

HUMMUS BAR

Hummus Bar was another of our favourite eateries that we also happened to visit 3 times during our stay, twice to eat in and once to take away as it was so close to our hotel.

They serve delicious falafel, hummus and tahini in very generous portion sizes. Unfortunately the vegan options aren’t labelled on the menu, so I’ve contacted Hummus Bar on Facebook to ask for a full list of vegan options and will hopefully be able to share that with you all here soon. In the meantime, be sure to ask the staff which dishes are suitable for vegans on your visit.

VEGA CITY

Vega City is a great 100% vegan, buffet style restaurant. They offer a huge selection of food and the warm meal menu changes week by week, keeping things fresh and exciting.

As the food is so reasonably priced and everything looked delicious, Matt and I ordered quite a few dishes between us to try. Matt’s favourite was the carrot kofta, whilst mine was the cashew cheese in breadcrumbs. We both also loved the battered seitan so much that we didn’t want to share, so had to order some extra!

GOVINDAS

Govindas is a pure vegetarian restaurant serving authentic indian cuisine, with lots of vegan options. The staff were really helpful and pointed out which dishes were vegan-friendly. The creamy pasta dish was both of our favourite and we also loved the mini battered veggies.

SZECHENYI THERMAL BATHS

One of the coolest things about Budapest is that that it sits on thermal springs meaning there are lots of outdoor thermal baths you can visit. From all of the research we (and when I say we, I mean Matt) did before our trip, Szechenyi Baths seemed to be the most popular. There are 18 pools, both inside and outside, of varying temperatures from ice cold to hot. Our favourite was definitely the beautiful outdoor hot pool, with the water temperature at 28 degrees, whilst the air temperature was only 10 degrees!

Szechenyi Baths Budapest

Szechenyi Baths also has the biggest sauna I’ve ever been in, as well as massage facilities if you feel like treating yourself to the ultimate pamper day.

Top tip: bring flip flops, as when you get out of the baths your feet will feel super cold walking on the paving!

CLIMB TO THE TOP OF GELLÉRT HILL

We climbed to the top of Gellért Hill which gives an amazing view of the city. Depending on your fitness levels, it is a little bit of a tricky climb but it is definitely worth it for the panoramic city view you get at the top.

RUIN BARS

Ruin Bars are a super cool concept found in the old Jewish Quarter in Budapest. They are built in the ruins of abandoned buildings and are filled with weird and wonderful eclectic furniture and decorations. Szimpla Kert is the original ruin bar and has two levels with various drink stations and lots of different rooms and unique features to explore.

Szimpla Kert Ruin Bar

Szimpla Kert is located just around the corner from Karaván, a street food court which includes vegan burger van Las Vegan’s. Unfortunately Karaván was closed on our visit but it has very high reviews, so I’m sure grabbing a vegan burger would make the perfect end to an evening at Szimpla Kert.

WHERE TO STAY ▹▸▹

We stayed at Prestige Hotel Budapest which was absolutely stunning. The lobby sits in the place of the former courtyard with the beautiful balconies of the inside rooms surrounding it creating an extremely breathtaking aesthetic.

prestige hotel budapest.jpg

It was also ideally located amongst lots of vegan and vegan-friendly eateries, with Govindas opposite and both Hummus Bar and Great Bistro Budapest just a short walk away.

The hotel has an underground spa which is the perfect setting to relax in after a busy day of exploring the city. Located next to the gym, the spa has a chill out area, a sauna and the coolest hot tub I’ve ever been in (we’re talking 4 different jet controls, changeable flashing lights and a mini water fountain)!

I hope you all found this guide helpful and if you have any questions / recommendations of your own, please feel free to leave them down below.

BERLIN VEGAN GUIDE

WHERE TO STAY ▹▸▹

On both of my visits to Berlin I’ve stayed at Almodovar Hotel, an eco-friendly, 4 star hotel with a roof top spa and an awesome vegetarian and vegan restaurant. Located in Friedrichshain, the hotel is close to the metro station and within walking distance of loads of vegan and vegan-friendly restaurants.

WHAT TO EAT ▹▸▹

BISTRO BARDOT

Almodovar Hotel’s restaurant, Bistro Bardot, serves delicious vegetarian and vegan food.

The breakfast buffet is a definite must, with its selection of vegan meats, tofu scramble, curry wurst and fresh bread. There’s also fresh fruit and variety of cereals if you’re a healthier vegan than me!

IMG_3556

We also ate dinner in the hotel and had the vegan mac n cheese which was absolutely delicious.

IMG_4234

BRAMMIBALS DONUTS

Brammibals donuts is an awesome little 100% vegan cafe that serves delicious handmade donuts, sandwiches and coffee. All of the food was amazing but the hummus sandwich and nougat filled donut were my faves.

IMG_3554

YOYO FOODWORLD

Yoyo FoodWorld serves super reasonably priced, delicious fast food in extremely generous portions. The schnitzel burger was absolutely amazing .

IMG_3577

VEGANZ

Veganz is a 100% vegan supermarket (how freaking cool is that?!) with a café attached. I wanted to buy absolutely everything in the supermarket, from cold meats & cheeses, to frozen pizzas, to dog treats, but as we only took hand luggage we unfortunately had to restrain ourselves. We made up for it by going crazy in the café and ordering two rounds of lunch. The cheese croissant and chocolate chip cookie were my favourites.

WHERE TO GO ▹▸▹

REICHSTAG BUILDING

The Reichstag Building is absolutely a must-visit in Berlin. Walking around the Dome, you have a stunning view of the city, whilst the provided headset gives an insight into Berlin’s fascinating political history. What’s even better, entry is free but you need to book in advance as it is a high security government building.

BERLIN WALL

The iconic Berlin Wall’s East Side Gallery is covered in beautiful, thought-provoking art. After wandering the length of the wall and admiring the art, be sure to visit The Wall Museum as it was incredibly interesting to learn about history of wall and definitely one of the highlights of our trip.

Vegan Fascinator from Warrillow Studio

Last weekend, Matt and I attended the wedding of one of his school friends at a beautiful church in London. It was the first wedding I’ve been to as an adult and I was so excited about every aspect of it, including piecing together my outfit. I wore a beautiful dress from Ted Baker, paired with some simple M&S shoes and my favourite part of the outfit: an absolutely stunning custom made fascinator from Warrillow Studio.

Warrillow Studio is a completely vegan and cruelty-free millinery that produces handcrafted vegan hats, fascinators, and headpieces; and I am super excited to be able to tell you guys about my experience with them, as it makes me so happy to discover awesome, vegan brands and of course share the ones I love with you all.

A few months ago, the lovely Rachel from Warrillow Studio reached out offering to create a custom headpiece for me. As soon as I browsed her website, I knew I wanted to work together, as not only did her brand ethics resonate with me, but I also fell in love with the beautiful, unique pieces she creates and knew I would absolutely love to have one.

As I had the wedding coming up, I thought a fascinator would be perfect, so I sent Rachel a photo of my dress and listed a couple of my favourite pieces from her website (Sarah Jane and Megan), then she came up with this completely unique piece made just for me!

It was super exciting receiving a surprise creation (it kinda felt like Christmas) and I was so happy to open the incredibly beautiful packaging and find such a stunning piece inside!

The extremely talented Rachel captured my style so perfectly and I love that she created the piece using three complimentary colours, as it means I can pair it with a variety of dresses for future events.

IMG_5017

I received so many lovely compliments at the wedding about the fascinator and I cannot wait to wear it to all of the weddings we have coming up next year!

If you’d like to buy one of Rachel’s pieces for yourself, head to warrillowstudio.com and browse the collection; alternatively, if you’d like a custom piece, I’m sure Rachel would love to hear from you so definitely get in touch via her website. I’d also love to see photos of any pieces you guys order so be sure to send me a picture.

If you’d like to see how I did my hair and makeup for the wedding and of course find out more about my beautiful Warrillow Fascinator, I filmed a Get Ready With Me For A Wedding video which you can watch on my youtube channel here:

Now, I’m just gonna leave you guys with this picture of Kitty photobombing my shot of the fascinator; she looks just as happy about it as I am!!

Vegan Cheese at Pizza Express!

Guys, something extremely exciting has happened: Pizza Express has launched a vegan cheese and it is delicious!

So as I’m sure you all know, Pizza Express has had an amazing cheeseless vegan pizza – the Pianta – for a while now, and their dough balls are easily veganisable by switching out the garlic butter for garlic oil.

IMG_4142

(Hangry jumper available here)

However, with the new vegan cheese, there are now a tonne more vegan options and I couldn’t be more excited! Matt and I headed to Pizza Express to try it out last week, and it’s safe to say we are obsessed.

To start, we of course ordered the dough balls with garlic oil, and also decided to go rogue and order the garlic bread with vegan cheese and oil instead of butter. WHAT. A. GREAT. IDEA. It was one of the yummiest things I have ever eaten! Garlic bread with cheese used to be my favourite dish at Pizza Express (sometimes I would just order 2 or 3 of them instead of a pizza!!!), so I’m beyond happy that I can now enjoy a vegan version.

IMG_4560

For main, I ordered a vegan cheese margarita with mushrooms and red onions, whilst Matt went for a vegan cheese margarita and they were both delicious. I’ve always loved the pizza express bases and their new vegan cheese is awesome, so I am definitely a fan!

IMG_4557

Whilst the Pianta is still my favourite pizza, it’s so nice to now have the option of ordering a cheesy pizza; and one thing’s for sure, I will definitely be having the cheesy garlic bread every time I visit!

Sainsbury’s Vegan Ready Meals

If you were excited when Sainsbury’s brought out their delicious range of vegan cheeses, then get ready to be SUPER excited, as Sainsbury’s have now outdone themselves by bringing out a range of vegan ready meals!!

Ever since I went vegan 3 years ago I have been waiting for awesome, accessible vegan ready meals to be a thing and I am so happy that they finally are! Which is probably why I completely embarrassed myself  the moment I discovered them in the tiny vegan/free-from aisle in my local Sainsbury’s by screaming out ‘OMG YAAAAAS’!

There are currently two vegan ready meals available at Sainsbury’s: vegetable lasagne & macaroni cheese, priced at just £3 each! I was super excited so bought three of each and one day later there are only two left; it’s safe to say I am a big fan.

IMG_3002

I’m still not sure if I can pick a favourite, but what I can tell you is that they go really well together, alongside some salad a a whole lot of vegan garlic bread.

IMG_3027

The macaroni cheese also tastes extra amazing with some added black pepper, paprika and roasted veggies mixed into it.

So, if you guys fancy trying out these delicious meals, head to your local Sainsbury’s to grab one (or in my case, six) and hopefully in a few months time there will be even more vegan options to choose from – personally, I’m praying for a vegan pizza!!

Are you guys as excited about this as I am?! Let me know if you’ve tried them and what you thought in the comments section below.

Vegan Afternoon Tea at The Langham

I absolutely love afternoon tea, so I was super excited when Matt surprised me on Valentine’s Day with afternoon tea at the Palm Court restaurant in The Langham Hotel.

We’ve been super busy with moving house so it’s taken me a little while (like 2 months!!) to get this post out to you guys but I’m really excited to tell you all about it as it was such a special experience.

The Palm Court restaurant is beautifully decorated and the food is creative and delicious; so although it is one of the more expensive vegan afternoon teas in London, it was definitely worth a visit for a special treat.

TEAS ▷▷

There was an extensive selection of teas, including lots of fruit and herbal teas. During the course of the meal, we tried lots of them including the mint tea which was my favourite.

SANDWICHES ▷▷

The bread that Palm Court uses isn’t vegan, so the chef creatively used waffle cones and popadoms to serve the sandwich fillings on. The fillings included a delicious falafel style chickpea pâté, hummus, cucumber, avocado, and tomato – all of which complemented each other perfectly. Although it was certainly an untraditional sandwich course, everything tasted amazing, so amazing in fact that we had 3 rounds of ‘sandwiches’!

img_1348

SCONES ▷▷

The perfectly fluffy warm scones were served with sunflower spread and jam. They were so light, creamy and delicious and were my favourite part of the meal (of course, we had several rounds of this course too)!

img_1345

CAKES ▷▷

The final course was a beautiful selection of Valentine’s Day themed cakes including: a chocolate cake, meringues, and my favourite: a fruit jelly.

img_1247

The elegant atmosphere in the restaurant coupled with the delicious and creative food made for an incredible experience. If you’d like to visit the Palm Court for vegan afternoon tea, you can find out more about it here.

PICKYWOPS PIZZERIA GOES 100% VEGAN

You guys have probably all seen on social media that PickyWops – a west London pizzeria – has recently gone 100% vegan! How awesome is that?! As soon as I heard, I knew I had to check it out, so earlier this week I was super excited to head there with my mum to try a couple of their delicious pizzas!

IMG_2423

We met the lovely owners, Cristiano and Andrea, who explained to us that they decided to make PickyWops 100% vegan to align with their values, as they both recently became vegan themselves. They also explained that not only is PickWops now a fully vegan pizzeria, but it is also the first (and currently only) one to specialise in alternative dough. I absolutely love this super unique concept and it was so cool getting to choose from the 6 alternative bases offered at PickyWops: hemp, multigrain, burned wheat, kamut, turmeric and spirulina.

Every single pizza on the menu looked insanely delicious so we had a really hard time choosing which ones to order. We eventually decided to order 2 pizzas to share: the vegan parmigiana on a burned wheat base and the today special on a turmeric base with a vegan almond ricotta stuffed crust. Yep, you read that right an almond ricotta stuffed crust!

IMG_2410

Believe me when I say that these pizzas were absolutely incredible, like the best pizzas I’ve ever eaten! The toppings were all finely chopped so they flavours fused together perfectly and the parmesan sprinkled on top was the perfect finishing touch. Oh, and btw, the almond ricotta stuffed crust was heavenly!

Not only are the pizzas at PickyWops kinder to the animals and the planet but they also taste absolutely delicious, so I really can’t recommend that you check them out enough!

Head to the PickyWops website to read the full menu and for more details on opening times so that you can plan your trip to pizza heaven. I’m already planning my next visit and which pizza/base combo I want to try out next!

MOD Pizza | Vegan Options

Last night, a bunch of my friends and I headed to MOD Pizza in Leicester Square, and I had to tell you guys about it right away as it’s seriously one of the coolest places I’ve ever been to!

IMG_2109

MOD is a build your own pizza (or salad, but let’s be real – PIZZA) place, where you line up in a subwayesque vibe & and choose every single aspect of the pizza, from the sauce, to the type of cheese (including a vegan cheese), to every single topping you could ever dream of!

So here’s what I ordered: classic mod base, tomato sauce, vegan cheese, roasted garlic, mushrooms, red onions & spinach. It was INCREDIBLE and under £10! MOD also has an awesome refillable drink selection, including all your typical soft drinks, iced tea and a whole range of lemonades!

IMG_2111

They also do an awesome vegan cheese garlic bread which Matt loved so much that he refused to share!

We all loved the food and friendly vibes at MOD so will definitely be back! There’s a whole range of locations across the UK, so if you’re a pizza lover, be sure to check out your local MOD!

Temple of Hackney | Vegan Fried Chicken

After the ‘Tshirts and totes’ pop-up shop launch party at Friendship Vegan Shoes, Matt and I headed to Temple of Hackney to check out the their famous vegan fried chicken!

IMG_1805

The staff in the shop were so welcoming and friendly and there were so many dishes to choose from that we couldn’t decide what to order; so eventually, we decided to try out almost the entire menu and ordered: a burger, a sub, chicken nuggets, mac n cheese, coleslaw and chips!

There’s a small seating area outside but as it was super cold out we decided to take away our huge, and I mean huge, vegan fried chicken feast and eat it in the car (after taking this cute insta-friendly picture)!

Vs real life

IMG_1860

I was amazed at how chicken-like the dishes tasted, so if you liked the taste of fried chicken and want to try a cruelty-free version, then you would love Temple of Hackney! My favourite dishes were the mac n cheese and the coleslaw, whilst Matt loved the burger and fries!

I think it’s so cool that there is now an entirely vegan fast food place in Hackney, and I really hope they expand across London and beyond!
