Lola’s Cookie Jar – vegetarian and vegan all natural dog treats

Lola’s Cookie Jar is a cute little pet bakery offering vegetarian and vegan dog treats made with all natural ingredients; meaning no artificial colours, flavours, or preservatives. As I’m sure you all know, I am obsessed with my four beautiful dogs (Poppy, Panda, Teddy & Kitty), so naturally I want to feed them the best and healthiest food to help them live long, happy and healthy lives. This is why I was absolutely thrilled when I came across Lola’s Cookie Jar on instagram, as it can be so hard to find dog treats that are not only vegan but are also made from wholesome, natural ingredients (unlike many of the commercial dog food brands).

Katarina, the lovely founder of Lola’s Cookie Jar, kindly sent me three bags of the vegan treats in her range for my gang to try out. Luckily the treats arrived on the day I left for Australia, so I got to have a little treat tasting session with the dogs (they thought it was all of their birthdays and Christmas rolled into one), and of course, take lots of cute pictures.

▹▸▹▸ “Just Relax” Calming Treat

As you can tell from Poppy’s ‘must not look at treats’ face, the dogs found these ones pretty hard to resist. Poppy, who is normally the fussiest eater, absolutely loved them so they must be pretty darn tasty .

▹▸▹▸ Lola’s Lucky Charms

After nudging them around a little, the dogs were big fans of the Lucky Charms. I’m not sure if this had something to do with the colour (particularly for Teddy, as he loves all pink anything!) but whatever the reason there wasn’t a pink crumb in sight.

▹▸▹▸ Carob Bone Truffles Delight

True to their name, the truffles are definitely the most luxurious of the range. They look and smell so good that I was even a little tempted to give them a try, and it is safe to say that the dogs definitely shared my excitement with these ones being their favourite!

I absolutely love finding and supporting awesome small vegan businesses, so I’m really happy we found Lola’s Cookie Jar and I’m sure we’ll be placing our next order very soon.

You can also follow Lola’s Cookie Jar on instagram @lolascookiejar and on facebook Lola’s cookies and bits.

I’m also really excited to be able to share with you all my interview with Katarina about the inspiration behind Lola’s Cookie Jar and what it’s like to run a small vegan/vegetarian business, so look out for that later this week.

24 HOURS IN A KENNEL FUNDRAISER UPDATE

Matt and I are currently travelling through Australia and it is absolutely beautiful here (look out for lots of exciting travel posts/videos coming soon). However, we’ve been so busy and haven’t had a good internet connection (we’re talking 20 minutes to upload one instagram picture!) that I haven’t had a chance to update you guys on how my night in a kennel fundraiser turned out.

To describe the experience, I thought it’d be best to share with you my instagram post from the day after the event, as it captures how I felt about the experience whilst the emotions were still raw:

▹▸▹▸ MY INSTAGRAM POST

Rescue dog in kennel

“As Maria, Natalie & I left the kennels last night, there wasn’t a dry eye in sight. Leaving this little baby in her kennel after spending 24 hours together was one of the hardest things I’ve ever had to do. Although I volunteer every weekend and (nearly) always manage focus to on the positive, spending 24 hours in a kennel with a dog, getting to know what it’s like to be them, puts everything into a completely different perspective. You get to see how much every little interaction, every little treat through the kennel bars matters. You see how much an hour walk means to someone who spends the other 23 hours of their day alone in their kennel. One of the things that gets to me the most is that whilst my night in the kennel was one of my worst nights sleep; snuggled up in the bottom of my sleeping bag, it was probably one of Dolly’s best.

If you think you could spare a couple of hours each week, PLEASE go to your local rescue centre & volunteer to walk the dogs. It really does mean more than you could ever imagine & the bonds you form with the dogs will be something you’ll treasure for life. I’ve also made some of the loveliest human friends whilst volunteering as I’ve found that the people who work with/choose to spend their free time with rescue animals tend to be some of the most compassionate & caring people I’ve ever had the pleasure to meet.

Before I end this massive essay, I wanted to say a HUGE thank you to everyone who has donated & helped us break our target of £1000 – you have made a huge difference to these dogs’ lives & I thank you for that from the bottom of my heart 🐶💗”

▹▸▹▸ VLOG OF THE FUNDRAISER

I filmed a short vlog of the fundraiser, so if you’d like to get a glimpse of what it’s like to spend 24 hours in a kennel, you can check that out below:

I am so pleased to announce that we raised a grand total of £1,400 for Foal Farms’ dogs, which is absolutely incredible! I was completely overwhelmed and humbled by all of the support we received throughout the process; it is so heart-warming to see how many kind, caring and generous people are out there. Not only did we receive so many donations that we were able to break our target, we were also featured in the local Newspaper as ‘Dog Crazy pals’ (life complete haha!) which all jokes aside will help raise awareness of the plight of rescue dogs and hopefully encourage people to consider rescuing their next best friend. For me, one of the greatest things to come out of this experience (that may or may not have made me cry a little) was hearing from friends and strangers that our fundraiser had inspired them to put in an application to volunteer at their local rescue centre.

I am beyond ecstatic with the impact our fundraiser has had and am incredibly grateful for the opportunity to have had this experience. I want to say a final huge THANK YOU to everyone who supported us, whether it be through sharing our posts, donating, or even making a change in your own life to help rescue shelters near you. Sincerely, from the bottom of my heart, thank you.

FED by water review

Ever since we got back from New York & Las Vegas where we had some incredible vegan pizzas, Matt and I have been on the hunt for a reeeally good vegan pizza restaurant. When Matt heard that FED by water serves ‘the best vegan pizza in London’, we knew we had to check it out.

FED is a cool little restaurant in Dalston that offers both vegan and non-vegan Italian cuisine, making it the perfect place to hang out with non-vegan friends/family. I love that this concept restaurant also aims to spread awareness about the nutritional importance of pure water because who doesn’t love chilled, clean water and all of the amazing things drinking it in abundance can do for our bodies?!

Now, onto the mouth-watering food…

▹▸▹▸ PIZZAS

I ordered a vegan cheese margherita with portobello mushrooms and red onions, whilst Matt ordered the ‘Silly’, a vegan cheese pizza topped with broccoli and soya sausage. We both agreed that the toppings and cheese were incredible and the crust was perfectly crispy.

▹▸▹▸ DESSERT

We managed to save a little bit of room for dessert and shared the chocolate mousse which was rich, creamy and just generally delicious!

We both really enjoyed the whole meal so next time we’re on that side of London, I’m sure we’ll be heading back to FED.

Sleeping ruff – 24 hours as a rescue dog

Next weekend, 2 of my friends and I will be spending 24 hours in a kennel, completely cut off from technology and living on a budget of £1.20 each (the price of 2 cans of dog food). We’re doing this to raise funds for Foal Farm, the rescue centre we voluteer at, to build a much-needed new kennel block for the dogs.

Foal farm is an incredible no-kill animal rescue that is funded entirely on donations, so fundraising like this is really important as it enables Foal Farm to continue saving lives.

We’ve filmed a short video explaining a bit about what we’ll be doing and more importantly, why we’re doing it  ▹▸▹▸

If you’d like to find out a little more about why this cause is so special to us, please check out my post 5 REASONS TO ADOPT YOUR NEXT BEST FRIEND and my friend Maria’s post about her dog rescue story.

We, and the dogs, will be incredibly grateful for anything you can donate, no matter how big or small. The more money we raise, the more lives we save! If you’d like to contribute, you can find our fundraising page at: gofundme.com/sleepingruff

Thanks so much for your support guys!

Manna restaurant review

I know I’m ridiculously late with this post, like over a month late, but there has been so much going on and it wasn’t until I was looking through photos on my phone the other day that I realised I still hadn’t told you guys about the insanely good birthday dinner Matt treated me to at Manna!

Manna is a beautifully elegant restaurant in Primrose Hill that offers a 100% vegan menu. How incredible is that?! As it was a birthday dinner, we decided to go all out and order starters, mains and desserts, and every single course was delicious.

Apologies in advance for the poor quality photos, Manna had some major mood lighting going on!

▹▸▹▸ STARTERS

The falafel slider starter was one of the best burgers I’ve ever had; it was so good that I could have eaten 3 or 4 okay 5 of these burgers for a main course! The burger was delicious and perfectly complemented by all of the toppings and the wholemeal bun. Matt was also obsessed with fluffy  yet crispy potato wedges it was served with!

▹▸▹▸ MAINS

For main course, I ordered the spaghetti and veatballs and it was delicious! The spaghetti was cooked to perfection whilst the tomato sauce and veatballs were incredibly flavoursome.

Matt ordered the bangers and mash and judging by his entirely empty plate at the end of the meal, I’d say it was a big hit!

▹▸▹▸ DESSERT

Whilst the starters and mains were both delicious, the highlight of the meal was hands down the birthday cake dessert. The vice cream & cookie semi-freddo was honestly the best dessert I have ever eaten. EVER! We’re talking crumbly cookie dough filled with layers of ice cream topped with berries – OH MY GOSH! It was absolutely insane.

I can’t wait for our next trip to Manna, mainly but not exclusively so that I can order a vice cream & cookie semi-freddo all to myself!

Marvelous Milkshakes eBook Review

My awesome friend Ashley, creator of Lipstick and Berries recently brought out her first recipe eBook:

So far, I have made 3 of the recipes and have loved them all! In typical Jade fashion, I took pictures of each of the milkshakes I’ve made… with my dogs. Enjoy!

▹▸▹▸ CHOCOLATE CAKE BATTER

This milkshake is definitely my favourite; it is like a chocolatey party in your mouth and is the perfect way to make chocolate for breakfast totally acceptable!

▹▸▹▸ OATMEAL RAISIN COOKIE

This delicious shake tastes like cookie batter and was insanely good alongside my oatmeal raisin cookies.

▹▸▹▸ STRAWBERRY SHORTCAKE

The strawberry milkshake was seriously so yummy and cake like – it blew my mind! Poppy must have thought it smelt great too, as she definitely tried to sneak a little lick during the photo shoot.

Vegan afternoon tea at La Suite West

As a belated birthday treat, my lovely friend Maria surprised me with…

▹▸▹▸ VEGAN AFTERNOON TEA AT LA SUITE WEST

I have always absolutely loved afternoon tea. There’s just something about the tiny little sandwiches that make them taste so much better than regular sandwiches. And the scones, oh the scones. Then, no matter how full you are, there’s always room for delicious, bite-sized cakes because who doesn’t love cake?!

Since going vegan, this was the first time I’ve had an afternoon tea that wasn’t home-made, so to say I was excited would be an understatement and this afternoon tea definitely did not disappoint.

▹▸▹▸ SANDWICHES

The selection of sandwiches was absolutely delicious. There was such a unique mix of flavours which made for a lovely twist on traditional afternoon tea sandwiches. My favourite was definitely the kimichi coleslaw with red pepper, whilst Maria unsurprisingly loved the summer herb pesto with tomatoes. I say unsurprisingly as she has a serious pesto addiction, we’re talking pesto pizza with pesto pasta for dinner on a pretty regular basis at uni (which I may or may not have participated in)!

▹▸▹▸ SCONES

The scones were hands down the best scones I have ever eaten in my entire life, bar none! The combination of warm scones, coconut cream and strawberries was just heavenly!

▹▸▹▸ CAKES

Even though we were both completely stuffed by the time the cakes were served, we of course managed to squeeze them all in, because I mean, look how yummy!!!

All three courses were absolute perfection and I will definitely be returning to La Suite West for more delicious afternoon tea ASAP.

Top 5 tips for a vegan traveling in Italy

As you guys probably already know if you read my Berlin Vegan Guide, earlier this summer my mum and I went traveling around Europe. After our amazing time in Berlin, we headed to Venice and then to Lake Garda.

Feeding swans on lake garda

We had some incredible experiences in Italy, from sitting on the rocks feeding swans in Lake Garda to Gondola rides in Venice.

We also ate a lot of pizza and pasta. In fact, for our entire time in Italy, aside from fruit filled breakfasts, we ate exclusively pasta and pizza for lunch and dinner!

Vegan spaghetti in Italy

During our time in Italy, I picked up some tips that I think will be really useful for any other vegans/vegetarians traveling in Italy. You can check them out in the video below as well as some footage of our amazing trip!
