VEGAN IN PARIS – SHAKESPEARE AND COMPANY CAFÉ

Last weekend, I visited Paris with some of my best friends from uni and whilst we were wandering around the city, we stumbled upon Shakespeare and Company Café. I was so happy to see that they had lots of vegan options so we decided to check them out. I ordered  a fresh orange juice with a hummus and carrot bagel; it was bursting with flavour and tasted absolutely delicious!

I’m so pleased we found this little gem of a café and will definitely be heading back there next time I’m in Paris to work my way through the menu.

Whilst we were in Paris we also spent a day in Disney Land; even though we’re all grown up now, it was still such a magical experience. I vlogged our whole weekend, including our visit to Shakespeare and Company Café and our magical day in Disneyland – it’s a super fun vlog so be sure to check that out here:

If you’re planning on visiting Paris and would like more ideas of where to find delicious vegan food, check out my previous vegan in Paris blog post here.

INTERVIEW WITH KENDEN FROM JEWISH FOOD HERO

My JGV Interview series is making a comeback and I am really excited to kick it off with an interview with the lovely and inspiring Kenden from Jewish Food Hero. From travelling the world working with the UN and NGOs, to being a working mum, to writing an awesome blog and cook book, Kenden has a wealth of knowledge and experience to share. I have absolutely loved hearing more about her journey and lifestyle and I’m positive you all will too ►▷►

Q: How did your vegan journey start, what were your main inspirations and influences?

When I was 12 years old, I became a vegetarian after reading a part of a simple book about Mahatma Gandhi.  His commitment to nonviolence in all aspects in his life, including food, inspired me to change the way that I ate. As I became an adult and started traveling all over the world as an aid worker, I started to see and experience more traditional food cultures, which are starch centered (rice, corn, potatoes, sweet potatoes).  During my overseas experience, I read the Starch Solution.  This book coupled with my field experience reaffirmed my commitment to plant based eating.
JEWISH FOOD HERO

Q: You have an awesome blog – Jewish Food Hero, tell us all about how you got into blogging and the inspiration behind JFH.

I yearned for healthier Jewish food options that were modern, plant based and beautiful. When I couldn’t find recipes that inspired me for the holidays, I created my own.

Shortly thereafter I started Jewish Food Hero to share recipes and inspire other Jewish women to include healthier foods on their tables. At it’s core, Jewish Food Hero is a place that nourishes the minds, bodies, and spirits of women around the globe. I also provide inspiring and beautiful resources, such as the luxe letterpress holiday calendar, to support women as they engage in Jewish life.

JEWISH FOOD HERO BLOG

Q: As well as creating Jewish Food Hero, you’ve spent 10 years working with the United Nations and NGOs which has taken you all over the world. I’d love to hear more about your fascinating career and travels and how you maintained a vegan diet whilst travelling?

Since 2005, I have lived in worked in five countries (India, Afghanistan, Democratic Republic of Congo, Switzerland and Cambodia) in addition to traveling a lot in Africa, Asia and Europe.  At the beginning of this global experience, I stopped being exclusively vegan for one year as an experiment.  At the time, I was not sure how to negotiate my food preferences with the multicultural experience I was having.  To put it simply, I did not want to go around saying “no” to people who wanted to share their cultural foods with me.  My health deteriorated during this year.

Looking back, I feel grateful that I had a non-vegan experience with food because it showed me two important things.  First, it is showed me that I like creating an inviting atmosphere around food (it really is more fun to say “yes” than “no”).  It is important to me to be kind to others and allow them to share with me.  Sharing food is a common gesture in every culture.  Second, it allowed me to recommit to eating plant based as an adult.  Plant based eating is the best choice for me because it aligns with my values and it makes me feel physically well.

Now, I find it very simple and exciting to be a vegan as I travel.  There are so many vegetarian and vegan restaurants now (I use the Happy Cow app and search “vegan food in city X” on Google to find healthy places to eat wherever I am).

Q: Where in the world have you found the best vegan food?

For me, Asia!

Ho Chi Minh City, Vietnam: Hum Vegetarian Restaurant and Cafe offers an ambiance that is beautiful and well thought out. Each dish is plated beautifully, and the food was fresh and delicious. The restaurant tagline is “Peace comes from within” and this is indeed how I felt eating there, both during and after the experience.

Bali, Indonesia: I ate a beautiful organic vegan meal at Liat Solomons Down to Earth Cafe.  The cafe feels aligned with Solomon’s values to create a business that is grounded in love,  non-violence and health-conscious living.

Kyoto, Japan: Zen Vegetarian lunch at the Tenryu-ji Temple is nourishing and peaceful.  The meal in this Zen monastery “is just enough to satisfy the palate and the soul.”

Q: They all sound great! I love finding delicious vegan eateries when travelling. What are your top tips for someone travelling as a vegan?

Transform anxiety into excitement:  Looking back, when I had a hard time being vegan, it was less about the geographic location and more about me.  When I was younger, I was less willing to speak up about my food preferences.  I had in my mind that I was holding onto a perspective that I might burden others, or that my preferences indicated that I was “difficult” or “controlling” about food.

Ask for what you want and be specific:  When I travel now, I create laminated business sized cards that say “I eat vegan. No Meat. No fish. No dairy (milk, butter, yogurt). No oil.” in the local language.  When I go to restaurants, I show this to the server so they know help me order food that meets my preferences.

Eat your starches:  Eating simple starches every day will keep you energized and your digestive system in good shape as you travel.  My favorites are rice (white and brown), potatoes and sweet potatoes.

Q: I love the idea of carrying a card in the local language explaining your dietary needs – I’ll definitely use that tip when I visit Asia later this year! Now, onto your delicious cook book, what kind of recipes does it contain and do you have an absolute favourite?

Jewish Food Hero Cookbook: 50 Simple Plant-Based Recipes for Your Holiday Meals offers simple and healthy recipes for 10 major Jewish Holidays.  The recipes align with what we know about the benefits of plant-based food, and pull from our Jewish traditional and symbolic dishes. That said, anyone can enjoy these recipes!

A Sweet Squash Spread that can be served with apple slices, break-fast Cardamom Coffee Cake, Vegetarian Shepherd’s Pie… I can’t choose!

If you’d like to get a taste of what’s in the cookbook, you can download my mock chopped liver recipe. It is delicious, healthy and touches at our Jewish food memories.  It is a savory dip made from mushrooms and walnuts and can be enjoyed on a salad or as a spread on healthy bread and crackers.

JEWISH FOOD HERO COOK BOOK

Q: If you could only eat one meal for the rest of your life what would it be?

I would (and will) eat simple meals for the rest of my life.  For me, this means centering my meals around a starch (brown rice, potatoes, sweet potatoes, etc), and eating a variety and good quantity of vegetables and a bit of fruit every day.

Q: Describe a day in the life of Kenden.

My daily routine and  schedule is that of a working mother in perhaps a somewhat exotic location.  Here are some details that happen daily:

Early Rise: I wake up very early and try to have 30 minutes to one hour to myself before the rest of my family wakes up.  I drink 1 liter of water with apple cider vinegar or lemon and then enjoy a fresh cup of coffee.  I sit quietly, pray, and/or do some intentional reading as a way to grounding myself for the day.

Family: I became a mother in 2010.  My daily rhythm includes caretaking: making and sharing meals, brushing teeth, reading together, practicing piano, bedtime rituals, and school drop-offs and pick-ups.

Move my body: 4-5 days per week, I do some type of physical movement.  For the last years, I have been enjoying barre3, yogaglo and pilates anytime.

Work: Quite simply, when my daughter is at school, my heart and mind are devoted to Jewish Food Hero.

Community:  I create community mostly through cooking and sharing meals.  Our family sits down together to share 2-3 meal a day. I connect with 2 close female friends per week via skype and by going out to coffee together.  We happily invite guests (the more the better) to our table every Shabbat dinner (Friday night).

Q: Do you have a favourite inspirational quote to leave us with?

VEGAN RESTAURANTS IN BOURNEMOUTH

Last weekend the JGV Compassionate Clothing Line had a stall at the Bournemouth Vegan Fair. As Matt’s lovely Grandma lives in Bournemouth (who btw at 90 years old is insanely cool, open-minded & banterous), we decided to make a weekend of it by travelling up on Friday lunchtime to spend some quality time with Grandma JJ, as well as checking out the Bournemouth vegan food scene.

image

AMALA CONSCIOUS FOOD ▷▷▷

We were really excited to hear that Bournemouth’s vegetarian restaurant Zoukinis had recently been transformed into a fully vegan restaurant, now named Amala. So, on Friday evening, we took Matt’s grandma for her first ever vegan restaurant visit to Amala.

image

The restaurant has a great yogi/eco-friendly vibe, with the beautiful woodland themed décor sprinkled with delicate fairy lights.

image

Firstly, let me say that I absolutely love the fact that you’re greeted by a glass of warm lemon water – what a great way to start a meal! The menu features an abundance of healthy and nutritious vegan cuisine, something Matt and I as wannabe HCLF but in reality Junk Food Vegans are not used to, but were very excited to try.

For main course, Grandma JJ and I both ordered the burger with sweet potato fries, whilst Matt ordered the veggie filo pastry. Although usually a bit of a Joey from F.R.I.E.N.D.S when it comes to sharing food (Joey doesn’t share food), Matt let me try a bit of his pastry and we both agreed it was absolutely delicious!

image

The burger of the day when we visited was a quinoa patty and had a very sweet taste, which we discovered was due to the fact that it contained dates. Neither Grandma JJ or I are big sweet mixed with savoury lovers (the idea of putting pineapple on a pizza has always seemed beyond weird to me); however, if you love that kinda thing, which I know a lot of people do, then this would definitely be the burger for you! The burger was accompanied by sweet potato fries that were cooked to perfection, deliciously creamy vegan mayonnaise and coleslaw which I definitely could have eaten by the spoonful!

image

For dessert, Grandma JJ ordered the sorbet which she absolutely loved; Matt ordered the chocolate brownie, and I ordered the cheesecake. Matt has a very mild nut allergy and forgot to check if the desserts contained nuts; unfortunately both mine and his did, so I had the verrrry difficult task of eating two equally delicious vegan desserts #itsahardlife! The Amala team were really lovely and offered to bring Matt another dessert even though it was our mistake; but he was very happy eating the sorbet that came on the side of his brownie.

Thank you very much to Amala for inviting us to their lovely restaurant; it’s always great to find a new vegan spot and it makes me so happy that you can now find a vegan restaurant almost everywhere you go!

BOURNEMOUTH VEGAN FAIR RECAP ▷▷▷

Now, before this post turns into a book, I wanna quickly say a couple of things about the festival! The organisation was impeccable, making the festival one of the best I’ve ever been to. The stall layout was extremely spacious meaning it was comfortable for stall-holders and customers alike, not to mention the location was incredible with a beautiful view of Bournemouth beach. We were really lucky as the weather stayed mostly dry and sunny, but let’s be honest, of course there was a little bit of rain, we are in England after all.

image

It was great to get to hang out with so many of my favourite veggie business owners, as well as discovering a few new businesses/charities (check out my Bournemouth vlog at the end of this post for interviews with You Cork It, Solkiki and F.R.I.E.N.D). As always, I also love meeting clothing line customers/blog readers and nothing is cooler than seeing people walking around in my designs; I really do feel so lucky to have such awesome customers!

BOURNEMOUTH PIZZA CO ▷▷▷

Finally, I can’t finish this post without telling you guys about Bournemouth Pizza Co. Lizzie, a lovely lady we got chatting to at the festival, told us about Bournemouth’s booming vegan food scene, and gave us a leaflet showing lots of places that have great vegan options. As soon as we saw that Bournemouth Pizza Co. offered a vegan cheese, we knew we had our Saturday night sorted! Pretty much as soon as they opened, we called to order: two large pizzas, a garlic bread, and a chocolate and banana calzone – is your mouth watering yet? I know mine is! Did I mention, they deliver? And this all came in at under £30? And it was insanely delicious. This place is basically heaven on earth for pizza lovers! Thank you very much Lizzie!!!!

VLOG OF THE WEEKEND ▷▷▷

We had such a great weekend hanging out with Grandma JJ, chilling by the beautiful sandy beach, meeting other lovely vegans and eating A LOT of delicious vegan food. I’m seriously considering a move to Bournemouth, as beautiful beaches coupled with a delicious and growing vegan food scene is basically everything I want in a place to live!

Be sure to check out my vlog of the weekend featuring our visit to Amala, our pizza night in, and a few interviews with awesome vegan business/charities at the Bournemouth Vegan Fair!

QUEENSTOWN NEWZEALAND VEGAN GUIDE

When we were travelling through Australia and New Zealand last year, we spent a few days in Queenstown, NZ. It was by far one of my favourite places we visited, as not only is it insanely, unbelievably beautiful, but there is also there so many fun things to do, like segwaying, luging and kayaking to name but a few. Annnnd, as if that’s not awesome enough, there are awesome vegan eateries everywhere, making it the perfect place for us!

I created a little vlog of our time in New Zealand so you can see how incredibly beautiful it is, and also chatted a bit at the end about our favourite places to eat in Queenstown. Check that out below and read on to find out more about all of the delicious food we ate during our trip! ▽▼▽▼▽

Habebes ▷▷

Habebes  is a cute little café with lots of vegan options that can be eaten in or taken away.

The friendly staff serve a variety of pastries and savoury rolls, accompanied by sauces and salads of your choice, making it the perfect place to grab lunch or a light dinner.

Farelli’s

Farelli’s is a cosy little italian restaurant that was recommended to us by a lovely vegan couple we met on our Kayaking trip. I’m so glad we checked it out, because it had some of the best food we ate on our entire trip. Farelli’s have a dedicated vegan menu with lots of delicious options and of course we tried out as many as we could.

FullSizeRender-1

To start, we ordered the panzarotti (now a main dish) made up of delicious doughy balls on a bed of spicy tomato sauce – it was absolutely delicious!

IMG_1984

For main, we ordered the vegan margherita and two portions of garlic bread topped with vegan cheese on the side. The cheese was one of the best I’ve ever tried and made for delicious pizza and garlic bread.

Fergburger

This super popular burger bar had people queuing out the door every time we walked past, so we knew we had to try it out! Ferg burger offers two veggie burgers that can be veganised: a falafel pattie (order without yoghurt and aioli) and my favourite, the tempered tofu burger (order without aioli). Full of flavour and served with deliciously crispy chips, these burgers definitely lived up to expectations.

FullSizeRender-2.jpg

The Ferg Gelateria also serves a variety of dairy-free, vegan ice-creams that are incredible! My absolute favourite was the chocolate/coconut combo.

So, if you’re lucky enough to travel to Queenstown, rest assured that you will be spoiled for choice with delicious vegan food.

Valentines Weekend in Tenerife | BuenaVida VeganBar

Ever since we got back from travelling through Australia and New Zealand last November, I have had the major travel bug! So, this Valentine’s Day, Matt and I decided to ditch our traditional Paris trip for some February sun on a long weekend in Tenerife.

image

We stayed in a lovely hotel right on the seafront, meaning the views from our balcony were incredibly beautiful. We don’t usually go on sunny holidays in February, so were both a little amazed at the 30 degree heat; Matt found it particularly hard to get his head around and kept saying, ‘I can’t believe it’s February?!’ Although I do love a winter city break, this 3 day break in the sun made such a nice change and was just what we needed!

I thought you’d all enjoy this picture of me apparently levitating (?!) in the ‘vegan because’ jumper from my Spring line (available for purchase here) #goingvegangivesyousuperpowers!image

Now, let’s talk about the food. Whenever I visit a new place, I always do a quick google search to see if there are any vegan restaurants nearby. I was a little surprised but extremely excited to find that there was a cute little 100% vegan cafe a 10 minute drive away from our hotel! So on the last day of our trip, when we’d had one too many chip rolls from the all inclusive buffet, we decided to head to the vegan cafe.

BuenaVida VeganBar ▽▼▽▼▽

The cafe has the cutest outdoor seating area, with umbrella shaded tables and pretty little pot plants. Moreover, the menu is very reasonably priced and the staff are extremely friendly and helpful, making this place an awesome little find!

Drinks -> The drinks menu was extremely extensive, and included lots of soy milkshakes. We both ordered the creamy and delicious strawberry and papaya milkshakes.

image

Starters -> Matt and I shared the Happy ‘chicken’ nuggets and falafel dishes to start! Both were delicious, however, I was a particularly big fan of the falafel!

image

Mains -> For main, we both ordered the soy burger with fries. Burgers can be customised with 3 toppings (top tip: the crispy onions were a great choice)!

image

Delicious vegan food, sun and beautiful views (and of course amazing company ;)) made this the perfect way to spend Valentine’s weekend.

ROAD TRIP ALONG THE GREAT OCEAN ROAD, AUSTRALIA

One of the coolest parts of our trip to Australia was hiring a camper van and going on a road trip along the Great Ocean Road. Despite the rainy weather and having more than our fair share of back-of-the-van cooker mishaps, we had so many amazing experiences including…

▹▸▹▸ Seeing the 12 Apostles

▹▸▹▸ Rock climbing by a beautiful waterfall

▹▸▹▸Making a pebble tower on this cute little beach
